Re: Latest Gear You've Un-Acquired....

I just sold one of those dynamount robotic mic stand things. Fell in love with the idea of it, used it twice in as many years. If something in my studio sits unused for a year or so, chances are it’s going on Reverb/eBay. Microphones being the exception. My obsession with microphones is not a health...

Re: DI bass and guitar

I mostly just record on my own, and I’ve been digging guitars through a DI lately. Usually through my Hamptone tube preamp, and always going through some combination of pedals first. That’s kind of my setup when I’m writing at home on my loop station, so maybe it’s a demo-itis thing, but I’m liking ...

Re: Neve flavor

The only DI I've ever used where I felt happy using the track as the main representation of the bass in the mix was through either a Hamptone JFET or the HVTP. Scott nailed it with those. Otherwise, zzzzzzzzz. Sansamp is sometimes cool too. In my previous post, I'm definitely talking about mic'ing ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Coles 4038 !!!! congratulations. so jealous. Thanks. It took some patience. I only get a piece of gear like that once or twice a year if things are going good. I'm scared it's going to immediately make me wish I had a pair. Nice! The first time I used mine it was definitely one of those “why did I ...

Re: mastering tricks for gaining level

Typically, when I mix and have the client listen, I have them listen LOUD. So that the mixes compare equally to releases, I set up a separate pair of channels on my console, and match the levels of the CD / laptop player to my multitrack mix monitoring level. They can then listen to the differences...

Re: looks like interfaces are flying off the shelves!

Yep. Seeing lots of people getting themselves into a minimal DAW setup lately. I just bought (ordered) one of those new SSL 2-channel interfaces so I can record at home during this madness. I’ve read decent reviews, and the price is right if it sounds better than my old MBox.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Got a pair of these ribbon mics handmade in Russia by Igor Burdukov. Have only done a quick comparison to the Royer on a drum kit, but they're sounding great on first listen. Affordable, too.

Same, unless it's my own shit, then it's a year.
+1. On a typical rock mix, it's usually about 6 hours before I have something I'm fairly happy with. Then it gets sent to the artist for feedback, followed by an hour (or less, if I'm lucky) of tweaks.

+1. I've used one for close to 10 years. A bit scratchy at times, but still working.

Earthquaker Rainbow Machine and Acapulco Gold, as well as this cool EV shotgun mic. Now I just need to build a proper mount for it.

Re: 500 series racks - how much power do I need?

If you're handy with a soldering iron you can buy an 11-space rack kit with PSU from CAPI for about $420. Should have more than enough juice for a rack of preamps.

Re: Recommend Me Some Room Tuning Software

If you're just looking for room analysis, REW seems to be pretty good (and it's free). If you're looking for corrective software, Sonarworks gets a lot of praise. I just bought their calibrated reference mic, and am planning to download the demo this week. You can probably get in the ballpark using ...

Looks like a 4038 pair just popped up in the classifieds at gearslutz, FYI.
