Paiste full crash, Zildjian A medium ride, Cinemag transformer for a Fet47 project, a pair of AKG D190E mics and some NOS tubes for my Hamptone preamp. Merry christmas to me!

Re: Touch Automation
I use touch for automating plugin parameters all the time, and do prefer it to drawing stuff in. Also recently bought one of those Behringer 8-fader things Dave mentioned, but haven’t gotten around to integrating it yet. It's pretty good but gets a bit funny in touch or latch mode in pro tools. It ...

Re: Plugins that deliberately add noise
Yep, super annoying. I used to automate the bypass on those CLA plugs at the start and end of every session until I found out about the "analog off" button. Now I just have to remember to click it every time I instantiate one of those plugins.

Re: Planning for December DIY drum recording
Middle of the room might not be the best spot, corner could actually be better, worth experimenting a bit. It took me awhile to realize this. For the longest time drums were tracked under the cloud in the middle of the room, away from corners and walls to avoid unwanted bass buildup. I recently mov...

Re: How important is it to mic the bottom of a snare?
I do it more often than not, both for getting a fatter, fuller sound, and to get more of the snap from the snare wires. That said, it may not be your cup of tea, but you won’t know until you try it. Be mindful of phase.

Re: Does anyone mic the hat and if so why?
I’ve done it occasionally if I’m using a darker mic like a Coles 4038 as an overhead, and I want a little more definition in the hats or for them to just sound, well, closer. Depends on the drummer and the song, as Alex said. Generally haven’t needed to with a cymbal basher. Something I just thought...

Just picked up a Baldwin Fun Machine (with 2 problematic keys in the bass section ), and a Peavey Decade.

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare
This tread is a reminder to me to always take a clean sample of each drum once the session is set up and ready to go. I frequently do but sometimes forget. So many drummers (at least ones I record) can't be coached on playing style/volume without it fucking up everything else for them and killing t...

Re: Cymbals Eat Snare
I've had some good results with overdubbing cymbals. It's nice to be able to pull the close mics back a bit without worrying about the extra cymbal bleed. The biggest challenge has been getting the drums and overdubbed cymbals to sound like one performance/take (if that's the goal).

Re: Real or phoney: Billie Eilish tiny desk
You'd think with her singing so softly and so far off the mic that you would start to hear the noise floor, especially once you start compressing things. Cleaned up somehow in post, or a just super clean preamp maybe? Those Neumanns are transformerless too, which might help.
