Re: Mixing with Hardware - Hybrid

For the past 8 years or so I’ve used a hybrid setup, doing most of the heavy lifting in the box but bussing groups out to a Nicerizer->Gssl compressor clone->1084 eq clone. This year I’ve gone back to mixing entirely in the box and I have to say, I don’t really miss the hybrid approach. The Nicerize...

Good idea with that clamp for the bottom mic. Floor real estate is valuable once the stands start piling up!

Re: Hotel Earth studio 1 build diary

Holy shit. That is gonna be great. When I first read mid-June I thought no way, but the "shell" being already intact is huge, and most of the permitting required for a new build doesn't really apply here, I'd guess. Keep us posted!

Re: RIP Clarence Kane

Sad indeed. Grateful to have had Clarence work on a few of my mics over the years. I've got it on good authority that Clarence sold his remaining parts and equipment to Cole Picks Vintage in Nashville, and recommended them over Pitman for future mic repairs. RIP.

Re: Saturation Tools and Tricks

Love Devil Lok and Sansamp. Decapitator to a lesser degree. Been wanting to check out Saturn for a long time, but I’m pretty sure I’d be relegated to V1 due to my ancient DAW setup.

Re: The bottom of the snare

I use it more often to help me get a bigger sounding snare than for the sound of the wires. The added bottom mic with the phase flipped usually just sounds more full to me than the top mic alone. The hi hat mic is most frequently muted for me.

+1 on MicroShift. I use it more often for this purpose than for its other functions. Doesn't work all the time, but when it does, it's great.

Re: Can excessive preamp gain damage ribbon mic?

This result is even more likely if the resonator is tuned to B flatulent.

Re: Mic pre in pedal form?

The Boss RC-20 has a 1/4” mic input. Probably overkill unless you want to loop your vocals pre-fx (in which case a 2nd Jam Man would probably serve the same purpose).

Re: Quirky Mastering Situation

+1 on Karl's suggestion. I wonder if YouTube has a built in HPF that prevents your speaker from overloading the way your master seems to be.

I'm also a hobbyist (and UFX owner), and I've been using the API 512b and CAPI VP28 a lot lately. VP28 has stepped gain and output. Hamptone is great too, as others have suggested.

Re: Drum OH's, only

I'd say Coles 4038 as well. But yeah, pricey. The first time I put up a pair I couldn't believe how big and full the toms sounded. No close mics required.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I acquired an RCA 44-BX (untested) for an insanely good price by today's standards. Put a new XLR connector on it and it sounds great.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

After almost a decade of hunting I have finally found a Marxophone. More specifically a mandolin guitarophone but basically the same thing. It needs a bunch of work, the end block where the tuning pins sit has started to pull apart, it has some top and back cracks to fix and it needs new strings. I...

Re: Insuring your studio and live gear

besides having an itemized spreadsheet of the item, serial numbers, and current value, I'd recommend you have detailed photos of each item (so you can verify it's existence and condition). Then I would also gather records of online sales (eBay, Reverb, etc.) where an item actually sold for around t...
