Re: Can excessive preamp gain damage ribbon mic?

This result is even more likely if the resonator is tuned to B flatulent.

Re: Mic pre in pedal form?

The Boss RC-20 has a 1/4” mic input. Probably overkill unless you want to loop your vocals pre-fx (in which case a 2nd Jam Man would probably serve the same purpose).

Re: Quirky Mastering Situation

+1 on Karl's suggestion. I wonder if YouTube has a built in HPF that prevents your speaker from overloading the way your master seems to be.

Re: What preamps are y'all liking these days?

I'm also a hobbyist (and UFX owner), and I've been using the API 512b and CAPI VP28 a lot lately. VP28 has stepped gain and output. Hamptone is great too, as others have suggested.

I'd say Coles 4038 as well. But yeah, pricey. The first time I put up a pair I couldn't believe how big and full the toms sounded. No close mics required.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I acquired an RCA 44-BX (untested) for an insanely good price by today's standards. Put a new XLR connector on it and it sounds great.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

After almost a decade of hunting I have finally found a Marxophone. More specifically a mandolin guitarophone but basically the same thing. It needs a bunch of work, the end block where the tuning pins sit has started to pull apart, it has some top and back cracks to fix and it needs new strings. I...

Re: Insuring your studio and live gear

besides having an itemized spreadsheet of the item, serial numbers, and current value, I'd recommend you have detailed photos of each item (so you can verify it's existence and condition). Then I would also gather records of online sales (eBay, Reverb, etc.) where an item actually sold for around t...

Re: Insuring your studio and live gear

Perfect time for this thread to pop up. I’m curious to know how other Canadians here are handling studio equipment insurance. Mine is a home studio, and my insurance company is willing to increase my property contents value to reflect the studio gear, but the amount they would reimburse me for in th...

Early 60's Sony SRA-3 Stereo Tube Preamp. Couple 2 channel tube preamp that i'm using for direct instruments like bass, drum machine, synth, electric piano. Wonderful warm, thick sound. it's unbalanced in/out via RCA but that's not an issue for me. These were made for tape machines, they paired wit...

Re: anyone working at 96k?

Your AD16 can do 16 channels at 96k. It uses SMUX over the 4 lightpipe outputs, 4 channels each. However, you need something that can receive 4 lightpipe inputs, for instance: a Ferrofish A32 Dante or such. I actually just did this on a session a few weeks ago. Hard to believe these nearly 20-year-...

A silverface Vibro Champ which sadly arrived with a farty speaker (replacement on the way), and a Squier CV Jaguar. It took some work to turn the guitar into something playable, but it's pretty solid now.

Re: anyone working at 96k?

I really haven’t ventured above 48K, because I’m most often starting sessions with drums and using more than 8 inputs simultaneously. Unless I’m misunderstanding, I think my Apogee AD-16 (what year IS this?) can only convert 8 channels when using optical at 96k, vs 16 channels at 48k.

Re: iOS tuner apps?

I was also not blown away by the Peterson app (iStrobosoft). It's possible I'm just using it wrong, but sometimes I'd have issues getting low guitar notes to even register as a pitch. I ended getting an app called Pitch Lab, and using its reference pitches to tune guitar, etc.

Re: A 1-mic drum recording has me rethinking so many things

Kick out (4050) ...really? Super-interested, as I have two of these and have never thought about using them on kick. They've become fast-favorites of mine for vocals and rooms and choirs / strings... but I've never put them near the drums honestly. Will have to try that. Yeah! Sounded like a kick d...
