it can work, if you're carefull. Use a reamp for impedance after a DI. Try to high pass and low pass frequencies so you get mostly midrange or use a mic that generally has that effect naturally. And just be mindful of the amp and mics proximity. But the live sound tech will still hate you. So if yo...

Without trying to be a jerk, there wasn't much to document when you were just putting a couple of ribbon microphones up.

While I like that you lucked into more gear, I did laugh when I noticed the Copperphone was on the list.

I've used Reaper for three years or so and I pretty much love it. It just does what you want it to do. The included effects are basic, solid, and useful. Definitely worth the money. If you are only going to listen to one thing I will ever post on this board, it should be this - The Reaper demo is f...

While this will not exactly be exciting from an "I am an engineer!" standpoint, a reasonably well respected pop punk guitar sound made it to tape by way of one of these - http://hughes-and-kettner.com/products/redbox-5/ Here's a related thread(by way of the wayback machine) - http://messageboard.tap...

Lots of good info in that SOS article, but one major thing to take away: "Dookie" was not a live-off-the-floor document of a band playing. It was as carefully constructed as a classic rock record, with all the drum edits, re-tracking bass and guitars after the basics, etc. So if you want that sound...

Without really having a solid budget number, this Tape Op review seems very positive -

So, what is "Colored" vs. "Clean" to the original poster?

Is there a particular sonic example to aim for? Some of the variations on the Classic Audio Products Of Illinois stuff seems like it might be a good bang/buck option.

Came across this -

While it might not totally nail what you want, it does have character.

First off, also a The High Strung fan.

If we're talking "all" opinions, here's mine -

Keep your hardware. Download the fully functional demo of Reaper. See how the hardware works with it.

No real downside.

As for "in the box", you could drop these folks a line -

http://www.ueberschall.com/en/product/143/Retro-Soul

and ask if the piano sets are full piano samples(assuming you hear something along the lines of what you want).

Seems like that particular set works with their particular sample player.

Along the lines of the above post, do you have any sort of access to an actual piano?

- Friend?
- Family?
- Another person who records?
- Local church that might throw you a bone?

Blazemidnight, what exactly is there in your current set of recorded sounds that isn't quite "there"?

Having your take on what you think does and doesn't work might shed some light.

Definitely want to get some transformer based gear live Neve or API-style, as I've borrowed gear or worked in studios with them and always been happy with the results. If you are thinking over 500 series gear, something like this might be a way to try things out on the cheap - http://www.ebay.com/i...
