also, in case anyone is UTFSF later, I installed the last driver for the Onyx satellite, win7 driver, and it works fine so far in 8. Just did a sound test, not ASIO recording yet.

took all of 8 minutes for windows 8 to not install correctly. UEFI vs legacy options, installing from a USB, but that's not FAT32, formatting drive for GTS instead of MBwhateverTF.

Ug. Dumb. Have to find a sata dvd drive.

edit: DVD drive, worked fine. up and running.

I'm only recording 2 tracks at a time 8)

I was getting disk and memory warnings while mixing. midi drums, mellotron samples, reverb plugs, etc, that was my issue.

the 64 MB cache velociraptors are pretty cheap these days. Assuming you're thinking a 64 GB or 128GB.

I am using just one 256 GB ssd in my new build. First, the page file only gets used when memory is used up. with 16GB memory, I'm not sure it'll ever get used in my system. I'll run one of my session and watch the memory usage. I may be able to just disable the page file altogether. We'll see. secon...

I went for it. totally overkill for the 2 tracks at a time I record, but future proof, video editing yada yada justify. Intel core i5 4670k + Asus z87-A MB $349 newegg combo - this does come with one old skool PCI slot, I can move my FW card over for the Onyx. -although sandy bridge is easier to coo...

I've also thought about getting an all-in-one with USB 3 ports that I could conceivably carry to different locations, like the walk-in-closet, to track. Best compromise between a tower and a laptop. a touch all-in-one would be great. but.....$$$$

I've been kicking around a $700 system. I currently move my PC into the closet when recording, it's loud and generally right under the recording desk Antec SOLO II case Core i5 haswell, ASUS 1150 MB fanless 500W psu WD velociraptor 150 GB hd (10k rpm drive, but only 2.5 inch drive in a 3.5 case, so ...

well my 7200 sata drive stuggles, but that's 10 years old, an 8MB cache drive on an XP machine.

If you guys are saying that in modern DAW with, say, 88.1 files, current 6GB sata drives are fine then I could stick with spinny drives.

so, a few years on now.... It would make sense to me to have a slow, low power HD for bootup and storage, and an SSD for "in progress" tracking and mixing projects. But I've read other people making the SSD the boot/apps disc and spinny drives as audio drives, which seems counterintuitive to me, but...

hm, I'm still using xp, I'm not even sure tracktion 4 would work on XP. Still using v2. I tried a session an 88.1, and while it tracked fine, playback is really tough over like 4 tracks.

maybe the excuse to get a new computer!

+. -. COM, and Shield?

I'm trying to correctly interface some old gear. A Yamaha MC1603 mixer, it has an unbalanced TS 1/4" output, or a balanced XLR output. The sleeve of the 1/4" output jack and pin 1 of the XLR are both grounded to chassis/earth. http://creotia.com/cote/pics/yamout.jpg Ok, so using the 1/4" output with...

I came across 8 of these JT-MB-C transformers here at work. what I really need is a line to mic setup...RCA to mini (mono). I don't think these will work because they're 1:1.

Anybody want to trade? Or, perhaps buy the JT-MB-Cs?
