Re: Happy Black Friday! Did you get anything?
Not really BF anything, but yesterday I found a pair of AT U891RCX boundary mics for like $35 a piece on Amazon Warehouse Deals, which if they actually work and include the cables is a frickin steal. Also an AT2035 for less than $100, which means I'll now have a pair, FWIW.

Re: Cheap Sleeper Fuzz Pedals for Guitar
...altho' I swear I can only ever almost barely hear the high octave unless it's really loud... I don't think the HyperFuzz is really meant as a true octave up fuzz, and I've never really heard that effect from it. With most octave fuzz type, you get the most clear octave up effect usually by using...

Re: Cheap Sleeper Fuzz Pedals for Guitar
Also, the Behringer SF300 gets a lot of love under US$50 - I've not tried it. This was going to be my suggestion. It's a clone of the Boss HyperFuzz, which itself is switchable between two different transistor-based fuzzes AND a good clean boost mode. I've used both the Boss original and the Behrin...

Re: Cable management trick
I just use the blue painter's tape for most semi-permanent stickifications. A while back, I bought a set of thin little tapes in 8 colors that I use for coding cables which aren't themselves colored. Certainly not trying to argue with you at all. I can see where this pipe cleaner trick could give yo...

Re: mastering, limiter, diy.
I mean, you're not going to get to that "perfect world" if you keep kicking your cans down the road hoping somebody will fix the stuff you left sorta fucked. I'm really not arguing against the benefits of using an outside ME, and honestly I'm not the one who made up this slogan "(try to) leave the M...

Re: mastering, limiter, diy.
There's so, so much more to mastering than just making shit loud. Fuckin right, and kind of what I came here to say, though most of the things you mentioned are for me more like "fixing the mix", which I honestly don't think should be the ME's job. If we're talking about a single standalone piece w...

Re: Side chain filtering for SSL bus comp
I feel like if you're going that far, in many cases you could just do a pre-emphasis/de-emphasis thing. One EQ before the comp to take the bass out and one after to put it back in. In analog, that might cause some compromise in the S/N, but only in that low frequency area where it might not even be ...

Re: simple level control device?
Quick and dirty: A typical passive DI box is a voltage step-down, and if that's not enough, they very often will have switches for additional padding.

Re: Out of phase guitars
You didn't ask, but of course the final polarity of the output of any given amp depends on a number of things. Most preamp tube stages are inverting, so how many of those it goes through makes a difference. In some amps, one channel will have a different number of inverting stages from the other, so...

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better
Ha. Yeah I had a very similar experience a couple years ago... I tracked, mixed, and mastered a whole split record for a pair of bands, and they dubbed the distribution cassettes by playing it from a computer into a guitar amp and capturing it on tape recorders they'd got from Goodwill. Was grindco...

Re: DAW as live mixer suggestions
I'm so confused. You said (and I agree) that stock plugins would probably be fine, but then you're talking about 3rd party plugins from UAD and Waves? What you didn't mention is which DAW you're using, but I do know that with Reaper and a halfway decent machine, you'd ought to be able to get 20 trac...

Re: Can Someone Explain Why This Isn't Working To Me
I used to do a lot of syncing of midi devices both to FSK and SMPTE/MTC, but I never had to cross the streams (had machines that just followed FSK natively and have never used a converter like you've got), and also it was almost 20 years ago when I stopped needing it, and I've killed most of the bra...

Re: Your storage solutions - esp for cables
I just kind of happened to have a spare keyboard stand around, so most of my mic cables hang off of that. Then I decided to move the dresser out of my kids' room to give them more space, so I moved that to studio. It's got four drawers - headphones and stuff, mic and stuff, adapters and DIs and stuf...
