Thanks for the ears, all... @BikeSailboatGuitar: no, not professionally mastered, to say the least. :-) I agree with you there. @tantamo: it's funny that you mention the website because i just spent weeks overhauling it so it wouldn't be confusing. :-) I made some improvements though, based on your ...

m/s

Hey thanks! Had to go check it out to remember. :-) There is definitely verb (like 2- or 3-sec verb) on the vocal; it was recorded in a pretty dry room, and i wanted the track to have a kind of dreamy vibe to it. Listening to it in the mix, though, i think it's fair to say that it gets its wider "bo...

m/s recording

Just for fun, I submit: "Give You a Word" http://caseyconnor.org (go to discography/g-g-g-ghosts?/Give You a Word) ...except for the cajon "kick" and "snare", and for the keyboard, every single track is recorded m/s (all the little shakers, the voice, etc.) It was my "learn about m/s" experiment tra...

PVC

Just for the record: apart from the music issues, PVC ("vinyl") is infamous for its environmental impacts (even more so than plastics in general)... it's used in all kinds of industries, and records are a tiny fraction of that use, but the general impacts aren't simply about the use of "petroleum" o...

Hi all - Finished my new disc, just got it online. All recorded at home. I would love feedback of any kind (aesthetic, long-range, microscopic, etc) especially on the recording/mixing/mastering tech stuff. I won't say much more so as to avoid predisposin' anyone. :-) http://caseyconnor.org discograp...

I don't worry about the "damage" that digital filters can do. Excessive subsonic frequencies eating up headroom is far more damaging to your mix For sure... I just get the impression that HPF'ing every track, as I did for a while, might be excessive... maybe I have bad plugins, but I've noticed occ...

Thanks all! Good tips. So it sounds like the way most deal with the super-low stuff is to visually inspect the speaker? These frequencies were literally like 5-10Hz, so not something that could be heard even with a sub, they were transient, just lasted a second or two, but they recurred a lot, and y...

When to high-pass the sub-sub-bass...

Hi - a long while ago, mixing a record with a friend, we noticed that the woofer was moving in and out very slowly; this friend ripped the screen off the front of the speaker to get a better look; an Oktava mic he had which was notorious for recording sub-sub-bass had somehow recorded a signal with ...

Hi - thanks for your thoughtful-as-always reply! If you decide to drop to mono on a track or two, then hopefully the mic used as the Mid is a nice sounding mic for the source. Yeah. It's was a bit farther back than it typically would have been, because I wanted the m/s to get some reverberant space ...

Tips on mixing with many mid/side tracks?

Hi all - I recently acquired my first "nice" mic (which can do fig-8), and in conjunction with my not-quite-as-nice-mic (which serves as the cardioid) I've been delving into mid-side recordings. I recently tracked a multi-layered song and recorded more or less everything m/s, just for the experiment...

Again, much obliged. The two things I most concern myself with are: too compressed or weirdly compressed? And: bass mixed OK (besides the fact that it's a synth)? I checked to make sure I didn't have a myspace page playing in the background at one point. Hah! Point well taken. That's the "other bane...

Right on, thanks for the feedback. "cluttered" - thanks, i'll look at that. I usually hard-pan and so i was trying to back off a bit. :-) "too clean" - yeah, this is the bane of all my mixes, primarily because i do it all myself and half of the stuff is synths (by necessity only)... especially in th...

Any opinions on the issue of phantom power and tube mic power supplies? I'm not worried about it for my mic, but just as a point of curiosity... I know about the some-ribbon-mics issue, but there are also posts like: Phantom power is fed on pins 2 and 3 at the same time, with the return (talking con...

If that CAD mic you're talking about has to be used a certain way to avoid melting glues, that is poor design my friend. Yeah, right; I mean, I'm sure they wish they'd used another glue. It may have been corrected later, I don't even recall which one it was (I think it was the CAD VSM?). I think it...
