Re: Electro-Voice 641- got one? What do you think of it?

So I bought it last week, and today is my first time using it in the studio, but not for tracking. I put it on a desk stand and used it as a talkback mic. Works perfectly, and looks cool too! I'll try it on a guitar amp next, but even if it sounds like garbage, it's still useful to me.

Re: Electro-Voice 641- got one? What do you think of it?

Is it a hi or low z model? Or switchable? That may determine how much use it gets. That said, I've rarely met as old eve mic that I didn't like for something. I had an earlier EV omni mic of a similar style (can't remember bteh model for the life of me) and liked it quite a bit as an overhead. It o...

Electro-Voice 641- got one? What do you think of it?

Anybody ever used the EV 641 on anything besides harmonica? How is it for vocals? On a guitar amp? On a bass amp? On a snare drum? Anything else? I'm thinking about buying one, but I don't want to buy it if it's just going to rot in my mic drawer. If you have one, how do you use it? Or does it just ...

Re: Fethead to the rescue! (was "What to do with a crippled MD421?")

Interesting. I wonder what specifically is going on with the 421 to make that the fix? MD421s have a "music / speech" switch, which is a black ring around the bottom of the mic, near the XLR connector. If he had the switch on "speech", it would indeed sound thin and honky with a regular instrument....

Fethead to the rescue! (was "What to do with a crippled MD421?")

A few years ago, I got a used MD421 U-5. It sounded awful- weak output, pure midrange honk, zero bass. Very disappointing, and just about useless. Last year, I bought an EV V2 ribbon mic. It had extremely low output, as is to be expected from a vintage ribbon. I started looking for a Cloudlifter at ...

Re: Clip-On Tuners?

When I bought my Jazz Bass about a year ago, I found something in the gig bag storage compartment- a TC Electronics PolyTune clip-on tuner. Now I keep it in my control room for any and all guitars and basses. It works perfectly.

Re: Vintage EV V2 ribbon microphone questions

Try doing the same thing but running it into a guitar amp, and speak into the mic. How does that sound? I think Dave MK is probably right. I wouldn't just jump to the conclusion that there's a problem with the ribbon or motor. On mine I can see through the grille to the ribbon and see it easily, I'...

Re: Vintage EV V2 ribbon microphone questions

So I have good news and bad news. I was able to remove the goofy non-XLR 3 pin connector and use alligator clips to connect it to a cable and run it to my preamp. The good news is that it works. The bad news is that it sounds... not great. After recording myself reading some text and normalizing the...

You’re sure this is a V2 that is a ribbon? I think there are versions with dynamic coil elements also.
No, it's a ribbon. I can see it through the grille cloth.

Vintage EV V2 ribbon microphone questions

I recently purchased an Electro-voice V2 ribbon microphone. It came with no cable and no warranty, but if it works, I may have made a huge score. Got a couple of questions about it. First, is there a good, low priced option for either a cable or adapter to go from its 3 pin screw-on connector (NOT X...

Re: Recommend me a wild delay pedal

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Realistic Sound Mangler- I mean Realistic Electronic Reverb. Mine doesn't give pristine, beautiful delays and reverbs. Nope. It sounds like it looks- cheap and plasticky. But it's a whole lot of fun! Great for gritty, lo-fi analog reverb & delay effects. It alm...

Re: Headphone mix suggestions?

I personally recommend the Oz Audio Q-Mix. It's a headphone mixer with six headphone channels. It's not the cheapest thing out there, but it's not expensive at all, and it's way better built than most headphone amps. You can feed it a main stereo mix as well as four aux sends, which could be somethi...

What to feed my Tascam DA 88?

When I moved this fall, I found my old Tascam DA 88. For those who don't know, it's a digital 8 track tape recorder that was Tascam's answer to the ADAT. It used Hi-8 videotapes. I would like to try recording with it (and my recently revived Mackie 1604-VLZ mixer) as a DAWless system- specifically, ...

Re: microphone death

I was given a Sennheiser 421 several years ago. I was super excited to finally get one... until I got it home and plugged it in. It had almost no signal at all, and what there was sounded like a bad imitation of a telephone. At least the price was right.

Re: Replace my monitoring amp with an old Crown?

Ten years later, I stumbled upon this thread. Since then, I've tried a couple of amps, including a Stewart PA200 that never quite worked right, and a Hafler P3000 that would heat up my control room whether I wanted it to or not. Now I'm using a Crown D75 that's on loan from a very generous friend, b...
