I record (and play) Bluegrass frequently. Randy Kohrs is a Dobro player who has a popular recording studio mainly for the great sounds he captures. Like me, Randy mostly uses ribbon mics for the smooth "not bright" characteristics. He demonstrates his technique in this video. http://www.youtube.com/...

My favorite technique for recording my upright piano is to pull it out from the wall about 2'. I open the lid and place a ribbon mic 12" above the opening. This will tame most of the hammer sounds. In addition, I use SDC mics in stereo directly over the player's head and pointing at the open lid.

Article: How to Record Bluegrass Instruments

Quite often I see questions on how to record a Bluegrass band or instruments. As a professional Bluegrass musician and recording hobbyist, I want to share this article I found. I use many of the same techniques described.

I've had the pleasure of working with one of the best dobro players in Nashville, Randy Kohrs, for some time and he liked to use a pair of Peluso P28 (a KM56 clone, I believe) for country but if it was a bluegrass track that featured a lot of dobro, we used Royer R-121's. But, he was using Scheerho...

Before you spend any more money on preamps and mics, check out the Black Lion Audio MicroClock! It will reveal the true quality of the gear you already have, then you can go from there. I use Presonus FireStudios and adding the MicroClock made a HUGE improvement in clarity and focus. I have convince...

I have the HP DV9000 with Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, wide screen and two 100gb drives. I replaced the 2nd HDD with a 7200rpm version for recording audio. All chipsets are Texas Instruments. Using it with 2 Firepods and Reaper. It's the best setup I've ever had! http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-p...tag=m...

Michael has some really great product and services, but let's not forget about the Peluso line of mics. The Peluso CEMC6 is really good on acoustic instruments. Great detail and not over-hyped like so many mics these days.

Back to the original question... Last year I spent some time going through all of my mics and testing them on acoustic guitar to find the one I liked best out of the bunch. As I tested each one, I rememberd thinking that they all pretty much worked okay and had decent sound, but nothing really WOW'd...

gotcha. i knew it mattered, just wasnt sure how drastically. i know build quality is highly weighed into the price of cables. i was thinking of just buying a good amount of bulk cable from Mogami and buying neutrik connectors and just assembling myself. probably be cheaper that way. That's what I d...

The rule of thumb I use for ORTF choir recording is to aim the mics at the outer edges of the choir when the mics are at 90 deg. That pretty much determines how far from the choir the mics need to be. Mics up high enough to point down at an angle and be able to "see" each row of the choir members. U...

I have both of those mics. They both sound good depending on the source. My RSM-4 had the inner screens removed by Michael Joly. If I were to buy another ribbon mic and had to choose between the two, I'd go with the FatHead II with a transformer upgrade (either Lundahl or Cinemag) to extend it's fre...
