Re: Is there a glass in Aerosmith's 'Sweet Emotion'

I was just doing a little checking elsewhere, and found an article about the creation of a 5.1 surround mix of Walk this Way for the recent Super Audio CD of Toys in the Attic.

In it, the original engineer quotes Steven Tyler checking on elements of the new mix: "Is the triangle loud enough?"

Re: Is there a glass in Aerosmith's 'Sweet Emotion'

If you have access to the 1991 remix (which I greatly prefer over the original), give a listen with the song's channels combined out of phase - bass and almost all of the vocal and much of the guitars disappear, leaving you with percussion only. Combined out of phase, it becomes much easier to hear,...

Re: Sounds that sound like other sounds

On my song Sullivan Street I did a lot of faking: The 'banjo' is an acoustic guitar (Fender DG-14 lefty) that had dehumidified to the point that a raised bump developed on the fretboard above where the neck and body joined. Almost anything would buzz out to a certain degree. So I capitalized on it, ...

Yeah - classic example. Though the song's "If I Fell" off the Hard Day's Night album.

Re: Classic recordings that are out of tune

I've got an older 2-disc Best of the Animals compilation where the mix they use of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood entirely goes on the chorus - tape speed changes and it's horrible.

Re: Your recent recordings and gear used.

Sullivan Street Very simple little track recorded last winter at my apartment - my acoustic's neck got overly warped from the apartment being too dry, and developed a horrible buzz. Decided to capitalize on the sound, capo-ing at the 3rd fret and running some parametric EQ on it to get a banjo-like...

Re: Famous synth sounds of The Who

By the way - this guy seems to have figured out Townsend's processes very well. In addition to describing the settings/gear you'd need for each of the songs, he's got illustrative MP3s up where he recreated backing tracks for each (the MIDI drums are weak, but no machine can fairly replicate Keith M...

Re: Ebow Urban Legend

Bingo. If you used something magnetic that was designed to keep the strings from vibrating - something that would fight the pickup's magnets - that would be bad. The E-bow ain't like that; it doesn't fight the pickup.

Re: The Stones...Exile On Sticky Fingers....whaddaya know?

Taking Charlie Watts' drumming to task is completely overlooking the entire "thing" with the Rolling Stones: They are not a polished band. There's raggedness on all sides, but the way the beat and everything breathe are half of what makes their music as successful as it is. I like to describe Danny ...

Re: Nilsson Schmilsson, what in the holy fuck???

There's a 2 CD set of Nilsson's first two albums ( Pandemonium Shadow Show and Aerial Ballet )... sort of. Apparently, some time after putting out each of those two discs, he revisited the tapes from those albums and rerecorded vocals and other elements and changed the pitch of some of the songs, re...

Re: what's that one led zep song...

Ah... it's Lonely is the Night by Billy Squier. The first time I heard it, I also thought it was a Zeppelin track. They got the sound so right - a Plant-like wail, Bonham-style accents, and a nice Jimmy Page crunch. Lonely is the night when you find yourself alone Your demons come to light and your ...

The very first single I bought was Big Time by Peter Gabriel, at a Strawberries Records & Tapes in Shrewsbury, MA. First full-length was Cloud Nine by George Harrison.

Re: Unproduce the producer...

McCartney said that his reasoning for turning around the credit had been "Yesterday", which he's seen in fakebooks where there's limited/minimal composer credits as credited solely to "Lennon". He's said he first broached the topic of turning around "Yesterday"s credit with Yoko while they were comp...
