C-1000 off-axis can get you good results on most vocals (male/female) and acoustic guitars (bridge, 30-45 degrees from the body). it's decent on hi-hats. but as overheads: ouch!

jeff tweedy bemonas the loss of tape on Wall Street Journal

i was on the train last night and peering over the shoulders of a man next to me, saw a drawing of Jeff Tweedy on the front pages of the Wall Street Journal. he was being interviewed about the shortage of tape in recording today. the article also interviewed steve albini. i didn't get a chance to re...

Re: Convincing a band to master properly...

wait, you've never had your work go through the mastering stages before and yet you're trying to convince other people to do this? you're in no position to do a 'hard sell' for something that you've never been through yourself. you have to remember that this isn't your product (even if you worked on...

Re: "Pop style has stopped happening"...

as a syllogism, the following three statements by numann don't pass muster: a) Style used to be, in part, a record of the technological limitations of the media of each period. b) The sound of the Beatles was the sound of what you could do if you pushed a '60's-era recording studio absolutely as far...

Re: Another Wilco/Ghost is Born thread....

jeff went into surgery for his chronic migraine problem this past year. it was some nasal surgery. it's definitely affected his vocal tone. some might say that he's singing clearer or that the wonderful tube mics at sear sound is the cause of the change in tone. i think that it's the effect of the s...

Re: Another Wilco/Ghost is Born thread....

aside from the obvious problems (namely, that the songs aren't as good as from their previous output and tweedy's recent operation and detox stint seem to have taken the rasp out of his vocals), has anyone noticed that the pianos on AGIB don't sound like real pianos at all? they're pretty flat and l...

Re: Favorite Drum Sounds

the last 2 yo la tengo records, "and then nothing..." and "summer sun," feature stunning details of brush work and ride cymbals. and the kick drum registers enough into the mix, like the faint sound of a heartbeat. roger moutenot is tops. anything by dave fridmann--check out the sounds on mogwai's "...

Re: Question about Pavement

compared to the original CD release, the recent deluxe remastered 'slanted and enchanted' sounds a lot fuller sonically, not unlike the twin tone era replacements reissues from last year. they've boosted the overall volume, for one. it's not like they went too far in converting 'slanted' for 5.1 sur...

Re: Yo La Tengo Reverb/Processors

go to guitargeek.com for a schematic of ira's guitar setup, circa mid '90s. i know that he's added a line-6 delay unit to his arsenol. he also uses a strange tape machine--literally, a walkman--for 'from a motel 6' and some other songs. as for the two amps, i think that he runs them (a fender super ...

Re: Your favorite recorded guitar part ever?

'we're an american band' by yo la tengo from "i can hear the heart beating as one." from the thick saturation, the dramatic use of amp tremelo, to the unworldly guitar solo buildup, this is a great sonic moment. it sounds like the world is coming apart. the acoustic guitars on side 2 of "exile on ma...
