Another thing that often works for me is to make a copy of the Bass track and put a HPF and sometimes a LPF on it.
Then put the reverb on THAT track only.
Sometimes delaying that track is nice as well.

I've got a giant marching Snare that nails the MF tone.

It isn't very Rock n Roll but it sure makes it easy to turn up the Room mics.
I've done it a lot (yes, with a good drummer).

It could easily be a technical glitch.
What is your setup?

I had an issue once where one of my Busses was getting 'double-routed' to the Speakers which caused me to hear the Left and Right Twice as loud as they were actually being printed (I was mixing in 5.1 so it was a BIG problem)

If you keep your volume low you won't get true ear fatigue.
I get BRAIN fatigue though.

Also you quickly get used to your crap sounds if you keep listening over and over.
I'll walk around the block and come back and can be shocked at what I thought sounded great earlier
