It's mostly just for the experience. Experience in Pro Tools is probably a better time investment, if you're considering this (or associated fields) as a career. Edit: This is coming from someone who just bought a tape deck and is waiting for an analog mixer to come Tuesday so he can use it. I alwa...

The fuzz sound on those Revolver recordings was from the amps. The Beatles were using the hybrid Vox amps at that time and for Peppers also. These amps have a tube output section and a solid state pre-amp. They also had a built in fuzz circuit that you could run into the other channel and overload t...

I have a 1993 LP Studio. Its a pretty good guitar but the Epiphone Elites are better and more resonant. I would like to upgrade to a nicer LP at some point, when I get the money. Though for $450 you can't go wrong. The biggest difference in the sound will be from changing pickups, but a close second...

I've got an Oktava MKL2500 that I had Michael Joly mod for me and it has become my go-to mic for vocals and guitars. I've used it here at home in a wood floored room that sounds ok but isn't optimized at all, and have used it in professional studios with optimized rooms...used it with male and fema...

Have any of you guys used the Oktava Mk-102? It looks like the same 012 body with a different and larger head. I have a pair of these and they sound great for what I've used them for, but I've never heard the 012 so I can't compare sounds.....

Thanks for the kind words. Sorry to hear about your job situation. I'll give you an extended loan on FetHead to ease the pain. Write to Meryl (meryl at Oktavamod.com) and tell her I'm going to loan you a FetHead until you get a job. She'll take care of the details. When you get a job that will be t...

I wondered where you went ; ) Yeah, the EH 12AY7 needs some help with ribbon mics. Rather than getting a new preamp or ribbon mic (which don't have higher output anyway) consider the $100 Triton Audio FetHead - 20dB of clean and quiet gain that makes the 12AY7 usable with the ML-52 on most sources....

Thanks a lot for that comparison Michael! I'm finally getting back to this thread and am grateful to you for replying! I had you go through and mod my ML-52's several years back so I gather that tightens the bass up and extends the high frequency response a bit as compared to stock? I need to get so...

Michael,

I was wondering how you would compare these cheaper Chinese Ribbon mics to the Russian Oktava ML-52 ribbons? I've got a couple of the Oktavas but haven't been able to use them a lot yet because my mic pres don't have enough for use with them.

Thanks,

greg

Word. I've been doing a ton of research lately. The A800's are amazing machines, aside from occasional power supply problems. They're probably agreed to be the best sounding machines ever. However they're not as reliable as the A820 or 827. If you buy an A800 make sure it's a MKIII, or at least had...
