First of all try your damndest to find some local bands that are gigging, bands in your high school are a great starting point. try to do live sound for them, or if you know someone who does live sound ask if you can hang out and watch what he does and try to learn. i wouldnt be half the studio guy ...

i recently made the switch from a g4 with 10.3 to a macbook pro with 10.4.10,my biggest problem was the intel processor i had some things that just werent compatible. mostly plugins though, and i use pro tools so you may not have the same issues

i have used some lobster claw elastics they are very tight but they do the trick, you can also find the same type of elastic on some organic parsely or something like that.
