I was told that once it's calibrated, the SRL button is useful as I won't have to mess with the levels at the Otari, only at the preamp/outboard. Once the machine is calibrated, you should not have to touch it at all, SRL button or not. It isn't supposed to be another variable gain stage like the i...

And going back to vvv's original thought about multi-mic-ing vocals, I remember reading something about Bowie vocals (don't remember which). Vocal close mic as usual, and 3 room mics of increasing distance. Closest room mic is ungated, to give a little ambience. Middle and far room mics are gated, s...

The MO is typically to use different microphones, like people mentioning a dynamic (57 or whatever) condenser (414 or whatever) and a ribbon (121 or whatever) all on the same guitar cab, for example. Not only are they different mics with different electrical outputs/sonic characteristics, none of th...

Kishi Bashi

http://kishibashi.bandcamp.com/ I was in a weird improv band in college with K, he is one of the most amazing musicians I have ever played with/heard play. Back then he played electric violin through MoogerFoogers and such. Now he plays whatever, recently touring with Of Montreal as a multi-instrum...

Yeah it's a weird thing to think about because on one hand, it is what it is. No matter why the recordings turned out the way they did, that is the way they came out, and that is the sonic fingerprint of the era. I think I probably have a similar imagined sound as a lot of people if someone were to ...

Great posts all! Interesting take on drummers, Donny. Before anyone had a template for rock, they had swing and bop. It's interesting to think how there was a time when nobody had heard "rock drums", and had no starting point for what "rock drums" should sound like. And that people as a whole just p...

Beautiful recordings for sure! I don't know if this was common to everyone's browser (I'm on Firefox 3.6.18, Mac OSX 10.4.11) but when I clicked Hear Samples, a little sub window popped up and it just had the Soundcloud link, which I then had to click. Maybe streamlining that so clicking the first l...

Just to play Devil's asshole here... In other words, it was estimated that approximately 97% were of such a magnitude that if the Time Error Correction had not been in effect, the exceedance of the low FTL would not have occurred. It seems like they're saying that because of the Time Error Correctio...

IOW, why is the isolation required on the speaker-end? I guess it's not, they've used this in some cars http://www.gizmag.com/toyota-employs-noise-canceling-tech-on-new-hybrid/9637/ , but according to the article they have to optimize for "sweet spots" due to the feedback in the car of speaker feed...

I'd never done it consistently until recently, but now in my little studio room at home I have a homemade Rat Shack omni electret mic hanging from the ceiling. It's hanging off the top of an angled wall/ceiling absorption panel so it isn't subject to too much in the area of nasty close reflections, ...

Yeah the only Ampex 456 I used was a nightmare shed-wise. It was "new" but I'm sure wasn't like, new-new, you know? I'm sure the RMGI is good. I was just surprised when I actually compared the thickness that it seemed to be closer to 1 mil than 1.5. If it was detrimental I bet there would be people ...

How are you doing headphone mixes? thanks. Added headphone set up to our site. Nice! (looks like a great spot, by the way, great pictures...) I was more curious if your regular clients -- that is, the musicians -- ever ask for specific gear, or show any signs that they even looked at your gear list...

I'm in the same situation, need to get a new reel of tape and pondering which way to go. I've got a Fostex B-16, which is pretty similar at least in track width and suggested tape (456). Used both Ampex 456 and Quantegy 499 (a +9 tape) on my B-16, though on very different projects. The 456 project w...

Yeah, if you're trying to attract outside engineers/producers, it's a must. It's not the only criteria, but when I'm taking a first glance at studios and making that folder of bookmarks, I'm typically looking at size/shape of liveroom and gear list. It's a quick way to at least narrow down the place...
