To me, electric guitars coming from loud amps are already compressed enough by the preamp and then the limiting of the speaker travel. So I try to use a set of microphones that can capture the sound "accurately". Usually, a ribbon mic, like my Coles 4038 about 6-12" away or more, pointed by my ears...

I use an M160 on a VERY loud Marshall stack all the time for my bands' stuff, and have never had an issue. I put anywhere from 3-6 inches back generally, so not smashed up against the grill. Good info. Yeah, I was thinking the short ribbon would probably be the better choice. FWIW, I use Chinese ri...

Ribbon Mics On Loud Amps
Up to this point I have typically recorded small-ish amps with either a beyer m260 or fathead. However, recently I've acquired a 5150 half stack which I love the sound of at higher volumes. Not tube melting loud, but definitely pushing some air. Should I be weary of even attempting either of these r...

For me the benefit of reamping is being able to focus solely on the sound coming out of the amp instead of the performance. So I record direct with no effects and get really tweaky with the pedals and gain staging during reamp. However, if the performance relies heavily on the feel of the effects yo...

Sharing Plug-in Settings Across Platforms
My band is mixing some material jointly.
I use Pro Tools on a PC; my bandmate uses Ableton on a Mac.
I'd like to send him an Izotope Trash setting I saved.
I know I can just send him a screenshot, but am curious if it's possible to share preset files across these platforms.

When I do this, I split the source's signal using a mixer, sending one channel directly to the DAW (the channel I monitor from while recording), and the other channel to the tape machine > DAW. Then, in Pro Tools, I nudge the tape machine track back to align with the DAW track, and delete the DAW tr...

Must be an error in Cool Edit Pro or the codec it's using. I converted the 16bit to 192kbps using EAC with the LAME codec. Sounds fine to me: https://www.yousendit.com/dl?phi_action=app/orchestrateDownload&rurl=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.yousendit.com%252Ftransfer.php%253Faction%253Dbatch_download%2526b...

This has never worked for me. Let's say I'm aligning an overdub tracked to tape (and then dumped): I line up the downbeat of the first measure--while it stays in sync for a few measures, by measure 5 or 9 it's out of sync. Inevitably, I have to go through the entire song, tabbing to transient, manu...

What I do is send to tape and DAW at the same time, manually nudge the tape track back to align with the DAW track, and then delete the DAW track. So it's: mic > mixer > sending 2 identical signals > DAW (This is the track I'll monitor) >Tape deck record head > playback head > DAW However, this is o...
