Leader tape is to put in between songs etc to mark and separate. You can see it on the reel so you don't have to watch the counter and you don't have to use up tape to space between songs. I was lucky enough to get in a few years ago when they had a movie festival to mark the 25th anniversary of sounds tracks being recorded there. They let us hang around in Studio 2 for a couple of hours, I ate in the cafeteria and then saw the movie in studio 1. It has made reading "RTB" so much more...
