No this was a bass player equaled by few I have ever met. He plays with purpose and fantastic touch. His dynamics ARE what makes him such a great player and my point was the engineer had clipping on HIS output so he told the player to turn down. There were no clanging strings or clickety clackiness....

Ahh, all good points. Maybe I should have been more specific as to my situation. It was a lone bass player doing overdubs DIRECT. No amp. I for sure will tell some folks to turn their amp down which to me is a wholly different thing that telling a player to not PLAY as loud. My main point was he was...

You're Playing Too Loud?

"You're playing too loud" is something I heard an engineer tell a bass player last night. It wasn't my session so I kept my mouth shut, but I was thinking to myself WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK??? In my opinion (and the opinion of the nice folks who helped me when I was starting out) you never, I mean N...

Dear god, FUCK the "rules". Regulate this, enforce that, blah, blah, blah. Read up on and worry only about HOW to build it right rather than what some dickless bureaucrat thinks about it.

The dummy load resistor looks like a little white inchworm with a metal nub on each end. You'll find it wired from the output transformer to the switchblock next to it. You probably didn't even know it WAS a resistor when you saw it as it is covered in a tightly woven fabric which helps to dissipate...

Yamaha PM1000 Recapped and Modified Pre+EQ Module

I have one fully recapped PM1000 module with the EQ modified to be more like the Neve 1073 EQ curves. It has had all the Tantalum and Mylar caps replaced with Wima MKS Series Film caps and the Electrolytics caps replaced with Nichicon UKT Audio series caps. I also wired film bypass caps across all t...

Yamaha PM1000 Recap / Neve EQ Mod Kits Available

I've got a couple of extra recap kits that I have left from a recap / mod of some Yamaha PM1000 Pre+EQ channel strips. These recap kits really improve the sound of the PM1000 and wake up the clarity and tone. High and low end response are deeper and the soundstage is bigger: just a HUGE overall soni...

FA/FS Two Channel Custom Built Tube Ribbon Mic Preamp

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300719721215 Here is a two channel preamp of my own original design. Not a clone of anything. It is great for any mic but LOVES ribbon mics and has plenty of gain and character. I am selling it directly to any tapeop folks for $100 discount off the ebay buy-it-now price. So,...

To say that a new product CANNOT be manufactured to the same level of quality that something made 40-60 years ago seems a little unreasonable to me. If the materials and specifications are the same, then the product is essentially the same. That is exactly it. The metals used, the quality of mica u...

Part of what makes buying used vintage tubes (as long as they test high of course) is that not only do they have superior tone, but they also have a much longer lifespan than any new tube. For instance that $100 Telefunken might seem expensive until you think about it lasting for 10,000 to 25,000 ho...

So much is misunderstood about the nature of tubes and tone. Let me tell you what you need to know for tubing guitar amps in general and maybe you won't waste as much money as I see others waste chasing THAT sound. SO, the most important tubes are the first preamp tubes. They will do more for your t...

Could it have been....GASP....United in Nashville?!? I think it may have been them. Why the gasp? Are they known for doing stuff like this? Sounds wholly irresponsible especially with their margins being so small these days on runs like that (I think it was 500 or less). They probably need to do 5 ...

I want to know how this happens: a local musician here in Asheville told me his new record was pressed for vinyl and had strange problems. The test pressing was sent out to them, they listened to it and everything sounded great. They approved the test pressing, but when the got their actual shipment...

Id love to have a MIC preamp and DI section as in Robs "The Boris" and Id also like to retain a section to drive the tape machine. You can't really turn it into anything else if you want to keep tape functionality. It uses a lot of complex switching already to make it do recording and PA duty. It M...

I wonder if it would be possible to make a pultec-style passive equalizer out of an akai m8/m7 mono block. i think the eqp-1a uses the same rectifier tube, 1 x 12ax7 and 1 x 12au7 (two halves of each tube in push/pull configuration, i guess with cathode follower). i wonder if a single-ended version...
