If I was a drummer and only had two mics/channels for recording, I'd probably try to tune my kit to sound good to myself, and then set up the mics right by my ears/shoulders so they'd pick up roughly what I hear, and get a good stereo image at that. But I'm not a drummer :D

First full mix of a song (and not terrible, IMO!)

Brief background: Most of my early dabbling in music was electronic, and when I became frustrated with finding a "direction" in music, I realized it was simply due to lack of experience -- partly with the recording/arrangement stuff, but largely simply lack of knowledge in music theory and such. I f...

Re: Other variables

Oh yeah he definately had other stuff on the tracks... CLA LA2A, 3A compressors, all of his tracks had hella stuff on them, ... On the vocal tracks I can't remember what chain he had, but we didn't really get that far... Do you put compression on your current vocal recordings, Anthony? I don't mean...

I may be wrong, but isn't most of this older stuff recorded rather simply with what would now pass as mediocre equipment (useful nowadays mostly as a curiosity or for a specific sound, rather than for fidelity)? And probably only 1 microphone recording the entire vocal group. I mean, stereo was a pr...

I think your approach is good. Since you're trying to make this essentially a career, you need to look at everything you do with it as moving you towards that career. The band may not be what you need musically , but there's more to being in a band -- playing together, listening to others, being in ...

It really is their best album, by far. It captured the sound of "Soul Coughing" rather than an "industry" sound (or any particular "sound" style, really). The first time you hear it you think "This is weird stuff" but they were a weird band! Re-reading up on it it looks like it was actually produced...

Depends on how many tracks you like to record at a time. People have been recording multiple tracks to computers for quite a while, back when even internal hard drives had a throughput under 100mbps.

As someone who plays double bass, I really value my low E @ 41hz. Obviously if it's boomy compared to other notes, it should hit some EQ, but yeah, doing it by default seems like a great way to always create bland mixes.

I had a Powermac for the last 6 years and realized that, in the end, I didn't really use any of the expansion capabilities. I had an extra FW card in it only because of a bug with the normal FW bus causing noise on my MOTU 828mk2 I had at the time. Thing got pretty loud in the hot summer months, too...

I like Logic a lot more with the new "flat" interface. There's a lot going on that's more easily accessible than the typical "separate view" interface that a lot of DAW software uses. The other great thing about it is that Logic Express, which is $200, does a TON of stuff. It doesn't have as many pl...

Experience counts for a lot, but even beyond experience with gear I think is experience with sounds. Adding "bass" to a song is so much more than just grabbing a bass preset and punching in some notes. I think picking the right sound is much harder when you're working by yourself, especially if it's...

As for your wife's camera problem, it's not the camera, it's the lens. You get a sharp subject with a blurry background if you have a big aperture (low f number). So a 50mm f/1.8 lens will do that very well. And that lens costs $100 from either Nikon or Canon. Which I guess is your point -- if you k...

Yeah, I'm with millzners. A good example are the artists that Mitchell Froom produces. While he can produce a typical studio album, the groups he works with where he's more "in" with the band have a very unique sound. I'm thinking of the first Soul Coughing album, as well as the two Latin Playboys a...

I think this extends into other parts of production, as well. Back at the beginning of the decade everyone was trying to get as much out of their computers as they could because you couldn't run very many reverbs at once. I heard many people complain that they had to bounce tracks that had 4 or 5 re...

Yeah I think it has to do with people not knowing what to do and saying "N", so it's "en" and then "you-endo"

Hell I've got a friend who says "mee-dee" for MIDI, although he also thinks midi means "sounds in the general midi soundset I hear when I click on .mid files on my computer."
