Re: sound effect libraries - good forums for second hand?

The old BBC sound effects libraries are all online now, free for non-professional use and quite reasonable for professional use:
http://bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk/
The quality of the sounds is mixed, but some of it is very good.

Freesound.org is a good place to go as well.

Re: De-harshing distorted guitars

Surgical subtractive EQ is good, as previously mentioned. Be mindful of octaves/harmonics, as Recycled_Brains said - I've found that cutting just the one nasty frequency enough to make it not nasty can ruin the tone in other ways, whereas cutting the octave(s) above and below the nasty frequency alo...

Re: Garage Studio Build

Of course, being closer to the wall also means the reflection coming back is going to be much louder and will therefore cancel more, so you have to take that into account, but absorbing 500Hz is easier. Just to quibble a little, 500hz is gonna be coming out of your speakers in a more directional ma...

Re: Garage Studio Build

To go into MoreSpaceEcho's link in a little more detail, if you care and don't know and want to maybe do the calculations yourself: Putting speakers against the wall, or close to the wall, is going to help a lot with low end cancellation because: sound moves at 1127ft/sec., and you calculate the wav...

Re: Unusual recording gigs and new experiences- share your stories

I think I posted about my most unusual one on TOMB when it happened: https://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=84630&p=686510 Still my most unusual one, I'd say. But I've since done a few that were a bit of an odd challenge and maybe a little more technically interesting. An acquaintance ...

Re: Recommend me a wild delay pedal

Delay Llama Plus. I somehow got an early prototype on ebay for very cheap - I wouldn't have spent anywhere near the going rate on it at the time, but now if my pedalboard was stolen it'd be the very first thing I'd replace. Sound-wise it's a perfect mix of the old DM2/obscure Japanese smear-y, blurr...

This might be totally unhelpful because it's not suggesting a specific technique, but: One of my biggest "aha"/"why-didn't-I-think-of-that" moments regarding microphones was at a DPA workshop I went to - the rep/tech was discussing isolation, polar pattern choice, etc., and at the end of that he sai...

It just means yet another overpriced Apple adapter. Apple customers are already very used to those. And kslight - I largely agree with you. But have you used one of the new Macbooks with the single port that does everything? I found it annoying as fuck. If that's the general direction Apple's going,...

Aw shucks; does that say "2013"? I'm a bit dyslexic and thought it said "2018" and I was actually posting three years early! But seriously, what I feel really stupid about is that I managed to scroll past the pictures of the done deal. Doh! It looks like the project turned out fine, and I wish ther...

or another good question to ask is - "what am I fighting against the most in my work"? ^^This. But I think about it this way: If I were you, I'd make your planned purchases and work with them for a little while. Sit on that spare $850 (and believe me, I KNOW how hard that is), and I'll bet the answ...

https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_dyneq_v2.html I hate to just offer a piece of gear/software as a solution to such a significant, nuanced problem (and one I often still struggle mightily with), but the dynEQ has solved probably 80% of that problem for me. Also, I've found that sometim...

I don't know how much full coverage on your car costs, how much your gear is worth, or what you consider an arm and a leg to be, but I've used MusicPro Insurance for several years. Never had to submit a claim, but I've been happy with the coverage they provide vs. the amount they charge me.
