i don't mean to hijack this thread at all, but i must say that i'm VERY interested in the responses to it, as i'm in a very similar situation. i'm renting a house in the city, have a similar basement setup (although i don't live with my landlord), would like to set up a studio space in the basement ...

i've got (as many others well know by now) a pair of b&o bm 3's that i got from www.proaudioheaven.com. to me, they're my favorite mics. they're big and beefy as drum overheads, AMAZING for smooth vocals, and are anything but 'dull' ribbons. it wasn't until i started recording with them that i real...

it's pretty subjective i suppose. some people would consider anything from the 80's and earlier vintage, while some wouldn't consider anything made after the 1940's vintage.

the mic in the picture above is from 1959. pretty vintage i'd say.

vintage microphones

anyone have any vintage microphones in their mic collection? hard to define vintage in a lot of respects, but you know... older mics. what kind of vintage mics have you dealt with? ribbons? dynamics? brands? any good uses for them? i'm bringing this topic up as i just bought an old oktava dynamic mi...

I kind of like them more organic, altho' with discernable right-to-left movement this is exactly what i prefer for toms. hard panned "cannon" toms are a ton of fun, but what really excites me is having the drum kit sound like you're standing in the same room with the drummer rather than having the ...

GBV - Isolation Drills has what I think to be the some of the best recorded guitar sounds of all time. YES x 10!!! i usually like hard panning guitars if there's two guitar tracks. my favorite thing is to record two guitar tracks, one overdriven and one clean, pan one hard left and the other hard r...

wow, that's a really good deal for such a beautiful house with a studio like that. if i lived in salem, i totally would've jumped on that. funny thing is that i almost moved to salem last year because my girlfriend was considering going to willamette university for law school. doh.

i used to be really dissapointed by the thin guitar sound i would get from good tube amps/combos. i then started using a large diaphram condenser to record guitar (usually an at4040). i usually put the mic about 2 or 3 feet back from a speaker, depending on how loud the amp is. i've used two mics be...

i tried out a marshall reflector the other day, and it sounded really nice. i think they're only about 120 new, which isn't bad.

i've had good luck with an oktava mk319, and with the mod i'm sure it's a million times better, although i've yet to try a modded one myself. in certain rooms and on certain vocals, an at4040 worked suprisingly well, but there've been times where it failed miserably. i'm pretty sure my next mic will...

i have a catalina club with the 18" kick, and i swear by it. it's a great kit for the money. sounds much bigger than it is, and it just feels good. about the only thing you need to do to it besides giving it a proper tuning is to replace the stock kick drum batter head. also, the stock snare isn't t...
