As far as GOOD mastering in recent years, the 2005 reissue / remaster of all the Comus albums are great. Exactly what "remastering" is supposed to do... restoration / keeping dynamics, compression in the right places...

"guitar trio is wonderful!" Yes! I recently saw it performed in Miwaukee with all local artists filling in most of the parts, and it was amazing. You really need to see it live to get the whole clashing overtones / beating frequencies thing... It doesn't translate as well to recording... I also got ...

the best
The best one chord jam? That would of course be Guitar Trio by Rhys Chatham from 1979 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhys_Chatham Halo Galo is def. a close second. Ruckzuck from the first Kraftwerk LP (when it was still basically Neu! with Florian on flute) is another great one. A lot of great krautro...

bad mastering
Thanks for the input. I am def. going to do some sort of compilation of these thoughts into a user forum. The wikipedia article was a good first step, but this needs to go further. I think just a view of the waveform for vinyl masters vs. the CD masters is enough to tell people there is something wr...

"I'm getting to the point where I'm sick of fucking talking about it ad nauseum. I'm starting to not to give a shit, and just let it happen, and that frustrates me." No! Don't stop talking about it. Again, I JUST recently got frustrated with it, as I recently started listening to rock music again, a...

Right, I agree it's not the Mastering guy's fault, but my assumption always was that it's pressure from the label... And that the artist would probably prefer a more "open" recording. But your response got me thinking. I mean, in Indipendent music, the artist usually has a bit of control over what t...

hmm
Yeah, maybe there is some bad mixing going on too, but when you open up the wave-form and visually see obvious clips, it can't just be that. I mean, compression is one thing, but I don't know many people who are running limiters in the red when they're mixing an album... It seems to be pressure from...

Bad mastering ruining albums...
Hi there, I'm kind of new here, (in fact this is my first post) so I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I've become extremely disapointed with a couple of (indy) releases I've bought recently that have used excesive compression / limiting. I used to think that this was only a "major l...
