This is related to - playing the cymbals softer. Make sure they are only hitting the cymbals with the tip of the stick. Sooo many drummers will hit the cymbals - usually crash and HH - with the shank of the stick. It definitely changes the tone, but it is at the expense of dynamics... You can try sm...

I played in drumlines for years - in high school and at LSU - where we had 6 basses, 5 tenors, 11 snares, 11 cymbals. It was a massive line with some amazing players! Anyhoo - for bass drum you gotta have two heads, hard felt beaters - they must be heavy. There are some mallets out there that are ma...

Bob power Article

Thanks so much for interviewing Bob.

He's been a hero of mine - ever since hearing his "Yeah" on ATCQ Midnight Marauders cd back in the early 90s.

Really liked how you approached both his perspective on the music, and his technical work. Super!

His stuff is great - and really interesting!

I know there was an interview - can't remember the mag - with a trained engineer who would take his tracks, and improve the sonic quality (not just mix, but also manipulate samples, etc...)

Now, I've got this crappy HOSA snake lying around. Anyone ever cut the molded plugs off of one of those an put on some better ones? Or is this not worth the effort? I'm assuming these HOSA cables usually fail in the plug, but maybe it actually is the cable? The cable is not worth the cost of the ne...

For a $200 kit you could hardly go wrong trying it out. Just so long as you go with the idea that you can always sand more off, but you can't add any back, you should be okay. I do know that when done properly you should be using a lathe and clamps/guides to make everything very precise. Many custom...

Yppah - You are Beautiful at all times

Anyone heard this album yet? It's out on Ninja Tune. Mix of shoegazer/indyrock guitars, analog synths, and nicely chopped-up drum samples. It all has a rally nice analogy sheen to it. Melancholy feel to most tunes. And no vox. Curious to hear y'alls thoughts. here's a link to some sound samples - mi...
