yeah, terrible mixing on this one. even the drums sound terrible, which must be hard to do with a drummer of that quality.
I guess they mixed it themselves, big mistake.

you could always record your playback into protools, so you have your tape sound, and cpu editability

What program are you mastering them in, or are you sending them out to be mastered? Were they originally recorded at 16-bit or 24-bit??? I am assuming that they were recorded at 16-bit. so if I've got some songs that are 16bits, and I want to "master" them for a CD, do I need to dither? they won't change bit rate but will get processed by some plugs.

remember too that how an amp sounds in a room is different than how it sounds one inch from the speaker. It's possible that a lot of the sound you are liking is being created by the room.
