I love Tape Op. I love Tape Op Magazine. I'm saying this 2 times before I ask, why is it so hard to get to archived articles at TapeOp.com? I just tried to get to one from a link that was posted on FB. I had to "sign in" to get to it then the whole article wasn't even there? It was a paywall. Maybe ...

Re: Basic home setup advice

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. The next question I'm running into is Thunderbolt vs USB. I'm running a Macbook Pro from 2015, so I can do Thunderbolt, but is it worth the extra cost for such a small setup? Lotta good info for you here. https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/usb-firewire-thun...

Thanks for all the advice. How do the Focusrite Clarrets compare?
They are pretty good for the money.
They don't allow you to add any processing on during recording the way UA does.

Re: Basic home setup advice

The UA stuff sounds mighty good and you get to use their plugs in record. Their "Legacy" plugs use a lot less processing power (helpful when you get close or maxed out) As suggested above you should check out one of their "instances" charts. Thunderbolt gives a Lot more instances. If your laptop is ...

Re: Mixing with the band there

My 80's band worked with a lot of great engineers in a lot of great studios. In hindsight some of the comments that came up were pretty laughable including one time when the drummer told Terry Manning he wanted his tom toms to sound "distant yet cannon like". I look at the "band at the mix" as a pro...

ATH-M50's. Every client that I let try mine loves them.
I like these and the less expensive ATH-M40's also.
They now come with 2 detachable cables (one coiled, one straight) which seem to head off the cable breaking.

I like them a lot. Clients like them too.

Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I read posts on here all the time about the 388 or the 688. I've owned tons of these machines including Fostex and Tascam and Otaris. I just don't get the romance. They aren't great machines. OP said he's done a lot of digital recording. Why not get better at it instead of going back to some small f...

Re: Recording Mac in 2019

Last year we were in a similar situation and ended up going with a custom iMac rather than the iMac Pro. We put a lot of RAM in it and we got a 2 space Thunderbolt 3 Sonnet PCIe card chassis for our Pro Tools card and the UAD card. It's been working great for us. https://i.imgur.com/1Y3uHVQ.jpg http...

Re: New Orleans style horn section

most of the "classic" sounds we love were done with one mic.

Most of the modern version of the classic sounds (Dap Kings) were done with one mic.

Get the best guys you can.

Re: 500 series racks - how much power do I need?

We bought on Rupert Neve 10 space then bought another because we liked the first one so much.
It gives you a readout on the power on the front panel and it also has stereo linking capabilities.

Re: Show Us Your Junk - cool gear porn YouTube Channel

Don't get too into those vids. They're just Earthquaker promo commercials. The participants probably had some incentives to do them. Yes and no. There are lots of shots of earthquaker gear and it’s clear that they’re the ones behind the videos but there are no outright plugs and they are not the fo...

Re: Reusing Tape

We routinely print mixes to analog before flying them back to digital to send off for mastering. This is the prefered method of all of our favorite mastering engineers. It works really well and the tapes last just fine. We replace the tapes from time to time. As others mentioned, starting with some ...

I like putting stuff away. Years ago when we were in a semi-shared space we bought some of those rolling tool cabinets. Now we have 3 of them. They are also locking. Smaller microphones Tools Mic Cables Speaker and power cables Misc Guitar stuff Guitar Pedals Guitar cables Drum stuff (Percussion) He...
