Re: An Analog Setup for My Needs (Tape Machine Talk)

I read posts on here all the time about the 388 or the 688. I've owned tons of these machines including Fostex and Tascam and Otaris. I just don't get the romance. They aren't great machines. OP said he's done a lot of digital recording. Why not get better at it instead of going back to some small f...

Re: Recording Mac in 2019

Last year we were in a similar situation and ended up going with a custom iMac rather than the iMac Pro. We put a lot of RAM in it and we got a 2 space Thunderbolt 3 Sonnet PCIe card chassis for our Pro Tools card and the UAD card. It's been working great for us. https://i.imgur.com/1Y3uHVQ.jpg http...

Re: New Orleans style horn section

most of the "classic" sounds we love were done with one mic.

Most of the modern version of the classic sounds (Dap Kings) were done with one mic.

Get the best guys you can.

Re: 500 series racks - how much power do I need?

We bought on Rupert Neve 10 space then bought another because we liked the first one so much.
It gives you a readout on the power on the front panel and it also has stereo linking capabilities.

No rug by the desk.
You'll be able to roll around on your chair better.

Re: Show Us Your Junk - cool gear porn YouTube Channel

Don't get too into those vids. They're just Earthquaker promo commercials. The participants probably had some incentives to do them. Yes and no. There are lots of shots of earthquaker gear and it’s clear that they’re the ones behind the videos but there are no outright plugs and they are not the fo...

Re: Reusing Tape

We routinely print mixes to analog before flying them back to digital to send off for mastering. This is the prefered method of all of our favorite mastering engineers. It works really well and the tapes last just fine. We replace the tapes from time to time. As others mentioned, starting with some ...

Re: Organization: shelves vs cabinets vs drawers vs hooks

I like putting stuff away. Years ago when we were in a semi-shared space we bought some of those rolling tool cabinets. Now we have 3 of them. They are also locking. Smaller microphones Tools Mic Cables Speaker and power cables Misc Guitar stuff Guitar Pedals Guitar cables Drum stuff (Percussion) He...

Re: machine room...

All 3 of our locations have been "One Room Plus". When we had our old Hoover-Mac G4 we got one of those passive boxes that brought the noise down to zero. I think we paid about $900 bucks for it. It was really worth it for us. Sorry we still don't have it cause I think I pretty much gave it away a c...

Re: How far apart do you like your near fields?

Most common mistake I see when looking at people's pics on socio-media is that they
aren't paying attention to the equilateral triangle.
It's the easiest rule to follow.

Next most common mistake is paying no attention to symmetry but that's for another post.

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

But the ones that I have that get the most use are the 140 reverb, MWS EQ, 1176 collection, LA2 collection, Precision de-esser, and Neve 1081. Close seconds are the Fairchild collection, Helios 69, API EQs, Neve 33609, and AMS reverb. All the Legacy versions of the plugins are totally great, by the...

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

When I first got my Apollo I felt like the cost of the entire thing was worth it just to get the EMT250. I have always loved that reverb sound. As others have mentioned the premium 1176 and LA2 versions are really great. It's nice to have at least one of their channel strips also. The API one is ver...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I used to have a Robin Ranger in the '80's. I sold it to a pal years ago. Another one fell in my lap last week. The older ones were made at the Tokai factory. When they started production again at the end of the '90's they were made in Houston. This one is from 2002 and has Rio Grande pickups https:...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

A couple of these Crane Song 500 Series tube EQ's and some more Rupert Neve Inductors how are the crane songs? I always wonder if 500 series tube gear gets a lot hotter? They sound pretty fantastic. We also have a Crane Song Flamingo pre-amp and their stereo compressor STC-8. Really strong stuff. O...
