Re: RIP Mark Rubel

Such a super nice guy. Helpful, sharing.
It's a real loss.
My good fortune to do a project w Mark at Pogo years ago.
Always so wonderful.

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

if you don't want the sax player to shove the mic in the bell, then you might try putting tape on the floor, or something bigger, to prevent them from moving in on the mic. If you don't they will inevitably (instinctively?) move right up to it, head on... remind them it's not a live show. som...

Re: amps vs. simulators

yes honestly proper touring amps and cabs are just for show, because any decent venue (even small ones) the crowd doesn't hear the amp, they hear the PA/FOH and those speakers and what the FOH person does. So it's mostly a vanity thing. Even when i was touring i was In Ears and the amp sometimes i ...

Re: amps vs. simulators

Next issue of Tape Op has a long review of the UAFX Guitar Pedals. The amp/speaker simulating stuff seems pretty cool, and I could see building a DI gtr recording rig with these boxes for sure. I love moving air wit am amp and putting up mics, but there are lots of times I'd love to have the sound ...

Re: Reco me some loud cans

I'm not all concerned about bleed from the cans - I'm trying to monitor guitars, bass, vox while playing next to a stoned and strong drummer. The drums bleeding into the cans are loud ... I'm not too concerned with sound quality - what I want is to be able to hear good enuff to play to the bass, an...

Re: Reco me some loud cans

These Vic Firth isolating headphones work pretty good.
We use them to keep the drummer's click from bleeding into the overheads. Sometimes with a singer in the booth who's got them cranked.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

My partner bought a Klark Teknik tube EQ a while back. It doesn't have the sound of our Mercury tube eq (it's fraction of the cost). We thought about getting some mods done on it as it was so cheap. Our tech had made us a little passive "transformer box" a while back and when we were re-setting up t...

*Two* Meyer CP-10?!?
The poor man's Sontec!
How close are they?
We aren't using them in a mastering situation but for full on surgical 5 band parametric they are hard to beat!

space saver stuff
I'm sure there's room for some extra 500 modules in those cargo shorts, too! :P

Cable stables is a genius move.
One which I'll be borrowing.
Thanks. I got Timbo to put those 500 series jobs back in the rack. Good eye!

Re: Some space saver stuff for the studio

Very cool space! Glad you're back "home". One little niggle about putting excess cable together in a tub - great idea, but don't put any line-lump power supplies in there, those things radiate lots of noise. Thanks. Our whole joint runs on balanced power and we took extra care routing all AC this t...

Re: Some space saver stuff for the studio

Years ago we were loaned a pair of QUESTED HQ210 mains that came with some rough 2x4 stands. They are kind of fun speakers but honestly we don't use them that much. More like an end of session party thing or the occasional 'check the bottom' thing. When moved out of our space for the construction w...
