Re: The bottom of the snare

I reca roscoenyc as a long-time proponent of The Pro,Jr., using them ( a pair, I think?) on stage with Earle. I think his might have been goosed, as, I believe, were Jeff Beck's. Lovely amp, awesome pedal platform but good sounding on it's own when ya want that just-at-breakup sound, it's perhaps l...

Re: The bottom of the snare

I always mic the bottom. If I get tracks from somebody with no mic on the bottom I re-amp the snare track with a snare drum sitting on top of a Fender Pro Jr and mic the snares there. I almost always have an 1176 plug on the bottom snare fast attack/slowest release.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I got a set of IsoAcoustic's Iso-Puck Minis for them from the Amazons. They came in a day and were absolutely simple to get going. For $99 I got better imaging and clearer lows with my set up. Are the Iso-puck-minis anything more than silicone gel pads? I bought some of the Auralex ProPod Lites (th...

Re: Size Matters!

In the past I had two smaller monitors up close, one for the edit screen and one for the mixer, which was cool. Then I went to one decent size tv, like 40” maybe, a bit further back on an arm. Now I’m on a 27” iMac. I do miss the bigger screen. I have been on a monitoring (speaker) set up mission o...

Re: 1073's... Real deal or one of the many clones?

I've got 4 vintage 1067s. They do sound really great and haven't been that much trouble but if I didn't live close to some really good techs I may have bailed on them by now. Aside from the vintage stuff I have I'm never really looking for more vintage stuff because of price and maintenance. I'm alw...

Sad indeed. Grateful to have had Clarence work on a few of my mics over the years. I've got it on good authority that Clarence sold his remaining parts and equipment to Cole Picks Vintage in Nashville, and recommended them over Pitman for future mic repairs. RIP.
That's pretty interesting news.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

A while back I had to replace my monitors at home. For maybe 5 years I had been using Eve Audio SC205s. One of them had its power supply fail. I had to pay for the repair myself and it took quite a bit of time. The second one started to go so I gave up on them a few months ago and got a set of Neuma...

RIP Clarence Kane

I just learned that Clarence Kane of ENAK Mic repair died this week. He was a really nice man with an incredible depth of knowledge as the last surviving RCA microphone employee. Tape Op did an interview with him in 2016 https://tapeop.com/interviews/116/clarence-kane-enak-microphone-repair/?fbclid=...

Re: VocAlign? or is there something that does this better?

VocAlign is pretty awesome. I've been using it for over 6 years and they keep improving it too. You can use it for all kinds of things. When I first learned about it I downloaded a trial for a bluegrass hybrid project I was working on that had a ton of 3 part harmonies. Pretty good singers also. We ...

Re: Best mics/mic-ing approaches for sax?

if you don't want the sax player to shove the mic in the bell, then you might try putting tape on the floor, or something bigger, to prevent them from moving in on the mic. If you don't they will inevitably (instinctively?) move right up to it, head on... remind them it's not a live show. som...

Re: amps vs. simulators

yes honestly proper touring amps and cabs are just for show, because any decent venue (even small ones) the crowd doesn't hear the amp, they hear the PA/FOH and those speakers and what the FOH person does. So it's mostly a vanity thing. Even when i was touring i was In Ears and the amp sometimes i ...

Re: amps vs. simulators

Next issue of Tape Op has a long review of the UAFX Guitar Pedals. The amp/speaker simulating stuff seems pretty cool, and I could see building a DI gtr recording rig with these boxes for sure. I love moving air wit am amp and putting up mics, but there are lots of times I'd love to have the sound ...
