Radio Session Recording
As I've mentioned in other threads I've being recording some live sessions for a radio session at the studio in my university. I thought I'd post an example in the hope of getting a little feedback. I'm quite happy with this one, maybe not my favourite track of the session but the others are longer....

As it would be at least partially for academic use I'd be installing it in a studio at the university alongside the Pro Tools and RADAR systems which would take care of the mixer/ cabling situation as well as a certain amount of the maintenance. Though even in the short time since my original post t...

Stereo Mic Techniques - Phase or Time Differences vs Volume
I haven't quite been able to get my head around this. If I record something (say a solo acoustic guitar) with a spaced pair is the stereo image formed by the difference in sound arrival time or differences in phase or the relative volumes at the two microphones? What I really want to know is - in wh...

Coming back to this thread after a few weeks and some of this advice is starting to hit home. Some guys seemed to assume that I didn't know what I was doing which was a pain, I'm not against taking advice but when they're clearly clueless it's difficult to deal with. Then again, some of the live ses...

Buying a tape machine
I'm toying with the idea of buying an 8 track (probably, track count is undecided). I'm thinking about investing in one to use as part of my masters' degree project so I could potentially spend a fair amount of cash as I could re-sell it at the end if it came to that. Until now I've been fully DAW b...

How much self noise is normal for a ribbon mic?
I've borrowed a Peluso R-14 ribbon and I can't tell if it's faulty or not as I've never used a ribbon mic before. There's a definite hiss on my recordings with it. I'm testing it by recording an acoustic guitar, it's about 30cm from the bridge of the instrument in a room that's reasonably quiet but ...

I'm unsure about equipment and instrumentation at this point but if they end up using my amps it'll probably be an Orange Tiny Terror and maybe a Mesa Stiletto Ace combo if we're lucky, at least they're not double stacks. If I was to record the drums in stereo but wanted the option to get rid of one...

Recording in the British Blues style
I'm recording with a band in a few weeks who are quite different from anyone I have recorded before, they're influenced by John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, early Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and similar. My main reference point right now is John Mayall's 1966 album Bluesbreakers. I could go about rec...

Introductory video tutorials on the subject of acoustics?
I feel like I've been burying my head in the sand for too long when it comes to acoustics. I have a vague understanding of things like standing waves, room modes, rt60 and all that but my knowledge is patchy at best. I'm terrible at mathematics, when I see an equation my first instinct is to run. I ...

I recently stumbled across the band Hookworms, they're kinda Spacemen 3 style psych rock, can't get enough of them lately. I'm sure a few of you would enjoy them http://hookworms.bandcamp.com/
(Feels like I'm spamming but I don't know these guys at all...)

Thanks for all the advice. I decided against putting up a poster up for now but I think I am going to do a few free recordings for bands of my choosing on my own terms, mostly because I do actually need to make these recordings as part of my degree submissions. If they're interested in recording mor...

I woke up wondering if you could afford to pay some musicians for a few hours. Find a really tight jazz trio, or rock cover band and pay them $50 each (each musician, not the band) to let you record 4 standards or something. You're practically guaranteed something for your reel and you'll start you...
