My favorite EQ plugs recently would be the waves API collection and the Abbey road EMI TG mastering pack EQ bundle. Ive got the URS bundle as well, and IMO the EMI and API stuff is superior both sonically and visually.

alot of good suggestions here..

Yes I am looking for 1/2" 16 track transfers with dolby C NR.
I have about 5 reels, and am in NYC
I know its a long shot finding the dolby C machines that are still running.

Old Ampex 456 almost always has this problem..I have had better results using 499 or BASF 9000. make sure you clean the whole tape path, rubber cleaner on the pinch roller.

I have used my 408 on every session for years. extremely useful mic; try it wherever you would normally use a 57. the mic's capsule rotates; very narrow pattern; great on gtr amps & rack toms.

I think a studio's bookkeeping methods often are an indicator. If I'm a client, I like getting at least an invoice. If its all cash and handshakes, fine, but if the studio is'nt invoicing clients then they arent interested in their business longevity.

Recording a mono source with more than one mic blended together is a perfectly good way to get a feeling of depth. I've had nice results on acoustic guitar using a 414 as the close mic and an earthworks omni as the far mic. The same approach is common with close mic'd guitar cabs ... assign each mic...

IMO 456 and 406 tape dont hold up as well as 499 does in storage - maybe something to consider when buying used tape. older batches of 456 deteriorate dramatically compared to 499 reels of the same age/
