The new Yo La Tengo album, Fade. I've listened to it at least once every day for a week, and am thinking this is their best album in 13 years. Produced by John McEntire (instead of their usual producer, Roger Moutenot).

Been listening to Yo La Tengo's new album, "Popular Songs" for the last couple days. Quite good, which is no surprise. Even a bad Yo La Tengo album is a great album.

Mic technique/selection/placement for hip hop beatbox vocals

I am going to be recording a guy who is quite good at beatboxing, but he has never really done it much into a mic. I have never recorded human beatboxes before. When I see the guys doing it live, they are handholding an SM58 and are basically eating the mic. Have any of you folks recorded beatboxers...

Thanks, everyone for your advice (both about the sequencer and about what to avoid in Austin). I ended up selling Little Saint. Sure, it's a small unit, and $60 is not much dough, but I may be moving to a new job and a new town soon, and I kind of decided it's time to purge old things weighing me do...

Am I going to regret this later?

So I have this Alesis MMT-8 that I bought when I was like 14 or 15 years old in the late 80's. The thing is great. It got me through many years. The way it forces you to work often makes you get creative results you would not have otherwise arrived at. And it's fun to use in a live setting by manual...

I like to use Rotel to make queso. I have two cans of it in my pantry right now.

I think Sufjan is a lot less pretentious than many much more revered artists/bands. I think most worthwhile, serious art has an element of pretention. I'm not a fanboy by any means, and have never seen him live, but I think he's a very talented songwriter and musician, and each time I listen to his ...

"Prayers for Rain" by the Cure has it on the piano, vox, etc.

I'm pretty sure "Memories Can't Wait" by Talking Heads has it on the vocals--at least the version playing in my mind right now does.

I have a friend in San Francisco who records prolifically, but has very little understanding or interest in the nuts and bolts. In early 2006 he bought an imac and started recording songs using garage band and the built in mic. A few months later he bought a Studio Projects B-1, an SM57 and an MBox,...

I just finished listening to the whole thing, and am overwhealmed. This is almost as much fun to listen to as it is to read about. Great stuff. I will post more thoughts after I have had some time to digest it all.
