Re: "Transform your audio with Transformers" Article
necro bump! I have an old 16x4 PM1000 that was pretty destroyed when I got it. So I have been harvesting transformers from it for years. I built a straight 1:1 x4 box a while ago but was not blown away by the difference in sound. Though it did work out great for isolating buzzy lines! Later I conver...

Re: Beyer Mic repair
I still have a broken M69 and TGX50. My favorite punk vocal and kick/bass guitar mics respectively.
Nope neither are ribbon. And the TGX50 is a very cool mic that they just stopped making.

Re: edit/work speed pro tools vs other platforms
For me Cakewalk Sonar was the fastest. There are just a ton of things you can do in terms of editing regions without having to go to an edit window or anything. Right in the multitrack view you can trim, edit, and fade in/out regions with various key combos and also by hovering over certain areas of...

Re: how do i hook up my used UA Apollo to my Mac????
The thing about updating Macs, or PCs or iPhones or iPads or Androids. You should have a backup of the device before you do the update. On a Mac you can use Time Machine to do a full backup to an external storage device. It will need to be a big drive, because the first full backup of your Mac will ...

Re: Recommend me an interface!
I have not had a chance to test the Apollo Desktop and the Apollo 8. Honestly I was tempted to just get the little desktop guy and use an ADAT optical cable to add 8 more inputs. But in the end I decided to do a 'play as you pay thing' with Sweetwater and get the rackmount sucker. Now that I have ha...

Re: Since we're talking headphones
I've always like AKG headphones like the K240. But they don't fold, and fall apart with a gust of strong wind. I've been using the Shures for a few years. Forget the model. Sell for $100 new. They are not premium looking, dont sound hyped, they fold up. They look as new today as when I bought them. ...

Re: How far have interfaces come in the past 10-12 years?
I'm still experimenting with the preamp gaining and impedance thing. I can say that I am totally convinced just by the guitar amp emulations. Of course they do not quite get that ratty, beat up pawn shop tube amp sound. But they do a better job of being a playable amp inside my computer than anythin...

Re: Recommend me an interface!
I did a similar thing recently. For me it came down to the Universal Audio Apollo 8 vs the Antelope Orion Studio Rev 2017. They both come with some hardware based effects. They both have very, very good audio performance and AD/DA converters. The Antelope stuff seems to be more cutting edge in terms...

Re: Thunderbolt interfaces
The Apollo 8 I bought last month is outstanding. So much so that I just went in for a 2nd one so I can have 16 ins and outs (with capability to go to 32/32 easily). If you are on a Mac with Thunderbolt, it's a no brainer. The software, driver and registration are friction free. The plugins are prett...

Re: How far have interfaces come in the past 10-12 years?
I made a lot of very interesting music that I am quite satisfied with using a MOTU 828 MKII. Later upgrading to a 2nd one for more knobs and such. Recently I was confronted with the demise of current drivers for the old firewire 828MKII. Well, I have a decent middle class job so I go out and get a U...

the KRK RP5 MKIII or whatever they are called now are not anything I'd want to mix on, but for post they are great. I would say that the facility I work for has the HS50's in every room that isn't Genelec. The Yamahas are not bad at all. For that money I'd go Equator, however the KRK's are just stup...

I've never used one but it looks like the Tascam MM1 gets pretty close to your reqs. http://en.audiofanzine.com/analog-mixer/tascam/MM-1/ That look skind of cool in a lofi, found at a flea market kind of way. But nothing I'd want to plug all my gear into and say "this is my only mixer now". I guess...

thanks Jim, that was kind of what I was thinking. I took a class on console electronics a long time ago and when we got to the part about EQ it scared the daylights out of me. Basically we were told that no matter what kind of EQ you use, you are mangling your signal. Ever since then I've wanted the...
