Re: mastering tricks for gaining level

If it's crackling the release time is too fast and/or there's just too much low mid in the vocals at those spots. So either automate an eq move at those spots or automate the limiter for a slower release.

Or convince your client to spend $35 and you can make it my problem. :D

The other best record to come out of Boston is obviously the Cars first one.

Re: mastering tricks for gaining level

Well, tough to say without hearing it, but if your issue is vocal peaks causing distortion, Standard CLIP (or any clipper) isn't what you want unless you have it set really soft...which if you can do it on just the vocal stem I suppose is worth trying, but soft clipping is just distortion....so you'...

Re: What music stuffs are ya's doin' today?

What about "More Than a Feeling"? Heh. That first Boston record is pretty unfuckwithable IMO. You gotta love a record where the guitar player did almost all of it in his basement, AND the producer wisely realized this was absolutely the right way to go and lied to the record company to ke...

i love mark sandman and morphine. that slide bass thing was so innovative at the time.
They were a great band, got to see them a bunch back in the day. Can still vividly remember what I was doing when I found out he'd died.

"Cure for Pain" is one of the best records ever to come out of Boston.

Thanks!

Yeah, Drew is a great singer. Here's his solo record, which also has Zach on a few songs:

Re: What music stuffs are ya's doin' today?

Finishing up the mastering on a 17-song record of really, really nice acoustic guitar pieces. When I'm done with that I'm gonna practice guitar, because inspiration.

Re: pan your drums out of the center

Mildly amusing story about audience perspective.....years ago, recording a friend's band at my old loft, we were fortunate to have the estimable Zach Barocas on the drums. One of my favorite drummers, an old friend and a big influence. So we record some takes, they all come into the control room to ...

Re: mastering tricks for gaining level

Standard CLIP is good, put it next to last before the limiter. So long as it's just acting on the drum transients (and ideally just the big stray peaks) you can get a few dbs transparently. -8 LUFS is pretty loud, you might just have to dig into the limiter more than you'd like. Slow down the releas...

Re: Depth of Field and Recording Levels

^^^^^ That track sounded great! To the OP: I wouldn't record stuff low on tape on purpose, that's not going to do what you're looking to do, and it's just going to raise your noise floor. Record at a normal level and pull the faders back. If the congas (or whatever) are sticking out too much, try so...

I'm not really sure, but I think this is what my friend Rob Noyes does. Regardless of what you call it, he's a remarkable guitar player:
