Re: Monitor dilemma

If you'd consider used, I'd look for a pair of old b+w 805s, you can definitely find them for your budget and I think they'd make you (or anyone) happier than ns10s would.

Re: moving from huge live room to small one

it was crazy to pay for all that space Back at my old huge loft I used to say that I spent hundreds a month just for reverb. It sounded amazing there and I miss it, but as I just master now, the big live room was just an expensive luxury for when I wanted to record my drums. PHD if i was in your sh...

Re: Rugs: 1 big one VS. a few smaller ones

Given a choice between barfing on a hardwood floor and a rug, a cat will choose the rug 99.8762% of the time.

Anyway I vote for a few small rugs, and only if necessary. Hard floor/soft ceiling!

Kurt's a very nice guy. I've watched a few of these, the Tiny Telephone one was good. Not the same series, but on a similar theme, check out Warren Huart's interview with Mark Rubel at Blackbird. Prepare to lose your mind at the sheer volume of amazing stuff they have there. https://www.youtube.com/...

Re: Mastering Anxiety

I used to get super anxious about finishing projects...now I regularly tell other people not to get anxious. It's going to be fine! You're done! Relax! Send me the mixes and put your feet up, it's my problem now.

Re: tell me about your unusual recording spaces

if it doesn't flood THE CRUCIAL BIT. Before sinking any money into a basement studio be absolutely sure it's waterproof. Trust me you don't want your studio to flood. Neighbors close by and stupidly loud bands means you're gonna need serious soundproofing unless you enjoy talking to the cops. If it...

Re: Recommend Me Some Room Tuning Software

Prepare to go down the wormhole. You're going to get so tired of hearing that sine sweep. But it is really super helpful. Acoustics is weird and counter-intuitive, and it's easy to make things worse. So keep the mic set up in the exact same spot and test every time you change anything. I know just e...

Gooloo

This is a good friend of mine's old band, from Chicago circa late 90s....and boy does it sound like it. They were never happy with the original master and wanted a nicer version for posterity so they dug their DATs out of the archive, and fortunately my trusty old Fostex DAT machine still works like...

Re: What musical thang didja work on today/night?

Opening the files I realized that we last worked on it exactly one year ago. This reminded me....my first solo record got started in 2001. Worked on it for a few months then it got shelved when I got busy with other stuff. It sat on the shelf for over a decade. At some point I was looking for somet...

Re: Power Amplifiers in 2019?

Big fan of the Hypex Ncore class D amps here. I built (and by built I mean assembled) a pair of their monoblocks to replace my old Rotel RB1080 (no slouch!). They're wonderful. Blazing fast, super clear, headroom for miles, can't say enough good things about them. Dead quiet, there's no fan. https:/...
