Re: Direct
I have the MXR bass di. It's fine. I think I'd like it better if I actually had a good sounding bass to run though it....grumble grumble.

Re: Snare/ Mic ?????
As far as I know, which ain't far, the TLM has kind of a hyped top end, which is probably pretty agreeable on a snare. I've been using the AT4040 on the side of the snare, and have also liked the Oktava 219 in the same spot...

Re: 2" 16-track vs Pro Tools HD
yeah i thought we already covered this in the real studio vs daw thread. i'd love to be recording to 2" 16 track and mixing through a nice board, BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY!!!! so DAW it is. -scott ps. i would just like to admit to everyone that, despite the fact that it says "alignin' 24 track" nex...

Re: Basic question about 16 vs 24 bit
What Blackwood and Frigoletto claim on that thread doesn't make a bit of sense to me and further seems to contradict what I have picked up elsewhere. I am gonna be unhappy until I have this right! -p it doesn't make sense to me either! but i'm pretty sure those guys know what they're speakin' on. :...

Re: Basic question about 16 vs 24 bit
I am finding it tedious looking up an explicit citation of this... -p Definitely don't worry about it! You have better things to do with your time than digging around looking for info for me. :D see what you think about this: http://recpit.prosoundweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=7992&postdays=0&postorder=&...

Re: Basic question about 16 vs 24 bit
mrhawkinson, thanks for the link. didn't really clear up mine and jeese's question though, which is: are the quant. steps smaller in the top 16 bits of a 24 bit system than they are in a 16 bit system? You are correct that there are 256 times as many steps in a 24 bit system... 16 bit=65,536 24 bit=...

Re: drum overheads
why not? give it a try. four overheads at once is likely overkill, but it might be great, i dunno. worst case you'd be able to compare two different mics and placements with the same performance, which would be educational at least. and if you have the tracks, there's no law saying you can't have th...

Re: Budgeting: Real Studio vs DAW
hey miami. good post! i only quarrel with one thing: I know that drums I record are NEVER going to sound like "When The Levee Breaks" or "My Black Ass" or whatever, and I'm cool with that. Never? all in caps? i think you sell yourself short. granted i've never heard your drum sounds (no sound on my ...

Re: track digital then to tape?
In my limited experience, tracking to digi then dumping to tape isn't as cool as recording to tape in the first place, but it's cooler than just tracking digi and leaving it. Mainly drums. IMO they don't sound like "drums!" without some tape involved. Not saying you can't get kick ass drums straight...
