Re: HOW OLD ARE YOU???
I'm 34. Started playing drums at 10, switched to guitar at 16 (hey it was the 80s), got back on the kit around 27. I'm way better at drums, glad i picked 'em up again. Started recording about 18, i have a modest 8 track/DAW/high ceiling loft (yes!) setup now. Never attempted to engineer for a living...

Re: Basic question about 16 vs 24 bit
what doesnt make sense though is when you say 24 bits has smaller squares. i thought each bit was 6db so how can 6db be smaller than 6db since in both 16 and 24 bit its the same value for what each bit stands for? my understnading is that the only difference with 16 and 24 is that when you get to l...

Re: help: mysterious emo reel!
So true! If you get a chance to see that Michigan Fest DVD that came out a few months ago, the STLJ performance is insane. Chris climbs *inside* of a drop ceiling and then falls through the acoustic panels and drops like 15 feet to the ground, springs up and continues to make with the rock-rock. It...

Re: help me make big, fat sounding drums with my limitations
Here's something I've heard of but, alas, never tried. Do your basic setup: kick, snare mic Put two mics as far away from your drums as possible in your room. Condensors if possible, as low noise is good for this. Put them up in the corner, or out in front stereo x/y or whatever. As long as they ar...

Re: Monitoring nightmare: low end on project studio monitors
buy some good headphones and really learn 'em. seems silly to be listening for 30Hz on phones, but i've learned to trust mine. i don't mix with them, i'll just check them occasionally. many times i find i just need to turn the bass down a couple db....

Re: help me make big, fat sounding drums with my limitations
i second that. i'd add a 57 on the side of the snare and probably something as an overhead. if you're fond of wailing on the ride, i'd try the overhead back by your head rather than actually right over the drums to lessen the cymbal wash somewhat. i've always recorded my drums to tape and then dumpe...

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...
I got caught thinking about it more because of BGV's, where 16 voices all breathing at different times is just a mess. oh man. on a couple of our songs we got totally def leppard and recorded like 32 tracks of her singing this one section. and you know i had to sit there forever and line up "s"s an...

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...
Man......FUCK that. DOUBLE fuck all that. I'm sticking to breaths, guitar squeaks, the occasional wavering vocal note, and all else that was the signature of a moment that will never be again. VIBE above ALL ELSE. There are moments where a slightly cracked note can send shivers down my spine (in a ...

Re: What Digital editing has Done to my Brain...
Awhile back i spent the entirety of one evening editing a drum take to make it sound like I could actually keep time. There were a lot of little things i liked about this take, otherwise i would've just done it over, but there were just way too many late snares and whatnot...i had to fix it. Anyway,...
