Re: miking the snare shell revisited

Anyone else have the "too much hi-hat in the mic" problem when micing the shell? -Z when i'm recording me, no, because i know how to play. :P i kid, i kid! as i mentioned above, with the mic 6" away, there's definitely some kick bleed in there and certainly some hihat as well. i just try to make it...

Re: miking the snare shell revisited

i've been using the AT4040 about 6" away from the shell, usually about halfway between top and bottom. love it. i get some good kick drum bleed in there too. try pulling the mic back a bit and see what you think. i like it better. anyway, much as i love this technique, it doesn't always work. i trie...

Re: Can someone answer some really basic questions for me?

Yeah, I know that's a problem. See, I broke the line input real bad ... I had a little 1/4"-to-1/8" converter sticking out of it when I was moving into my apartment, and it got snapped off .. I opened it up, and the input is pretty much shattered. :D well....yeah....that might be the problem. :D i ...

Re: Can someone answer some really basic questions for me?

Beau, I can't speak for everyone else, but on my Otari 5050, 0db on the VU is calibrated to +6, and I peak it way higher than that all the time. I think my peak lights are set at +18 (I should really know that exactly, shouldn't I? Such a bad engineer.....) and they light constantly on drums. As I m...

Re: Can someone answer some really basic questions for me?

well, it still depends. :D it depends on what kind of tape you're using, how you have the machine set up, and how much tape saturation you're aiming for. for example, sometimes i record drums super hot to tape and squash 'em right down, other times that's not what i want and i'm a lot more conservat...

Re: Can someone answer some really basic questions for me?

hi magritte, 1. it depends. what are you recording to? tape, hard disc, etc. 2. don't worry about it. just worry about getting each mix sounding good. let the mastering engineer worry about getting them all to play at a consistent volume. if they're reasonably mixed they should all be relatively clo...

Re: the mastering loudness issue con't

yep. i really like the new radiohead for example, but i've had enough by track 8...for 'loud' mastering i think that's done fairly well, but it's still way too unrelenting for me. i must be too old, because that shit's too loud. on a related note, there's some good stuff from Nika on his forum at PS...

Re: Ultimate Small Summing Mixer Solution??? ALL PROS CHECK

yeah, from my limited time with it, the TL tube tracker definitely added some 'analog goodness' compared to mixing in the box. routing-wise it's not very flexible though, there's no assigning anything to the 2 buss, all the channels are routed there automatically...makes any kind of dub mixing prett...
