thanks for all the responses. There's some great ideas here I'd like to try. I hadn't thought of doing an xy setup. Anybody tried an xy setup for guitar and an LDC on vocals at the same time? I usually record my vocals and acoustic simultaneously.

I have an FMR Really Nice Preamp (RNP) and I like it a lot. They sell them at atlasproaudio.com --great store with superb service. They've got good suggestions on quality gear there as well.
