Yeah, me and my friend talk about autotune a lot, and he doesn't record. Anyway, I've been thinking lately that being a recording engineer and autotuning artists just because you have to or are told to, to me is the equivalent of working for any plain old corporation. The whole appeal of being a rec...

pop 'bands' and the production of them
Does anybody here pay attention to current pop artists, such as watching videos occasionally on mtv 'hits'? It's ridiculous, but I am curious as to how these 'artists' get their guitars to sound like keyboards, unless they are just using synths in the studio. For example, take the all american rejec...

Something I did that you guys might appreciate
Since this is a forum for audio, and since a lot of you guys talk about the state of popular music, and how overproduced it is, I figured I'd show you guys a band I worked with recently. They're called pretty pink monday, and basically it's just electronic 'music' and vocals. They call themselves po...

scarlett johanson album?
I just heard about this, and its basically a bunch of tom waits covers? Isn't that strange? Do you think she really listens to him? I read a review on all music guide suggesting it was a lot of dave sitek's ideas, what do you guys think, and do you care? I just am wondering why tom waits. Is she try...

Yeah I'm listening to the stuff on mapleshade now, im not sure i like the sound. It sounds pretty 'raw' I guess, not sure how else to describe it. Definitely doesn't sound polished. It's pretty unique though. I liked the fallen angel song I sampled however. I didn't like the punk band thing I listen...

Yeah, I agree with what you guys are saying. Compression just intimidates me a bit. I do think I know what a sounds like to a degree, I just need to experiment with it a bit, thanks for the info. I haven't even read all those posts yet but I'll get to it. I definitely want to hear dynamic range in a...

Don't sweat it on the overheads Mark. When you're just starting out you're supposed to suck a little! Hell, just last month I put up a Mojave MA200 up backwards for a vocal! Both sides look the same, aside from the lettering on the front... which was covered up by using an alternate shockmount. 4 b...

are there any engineers/producers who 'dont' use compression
Im just wondering because I myself don't like using it, although I haven't really up to this point, since I have only been recording guitar/vocals/bass and not live drums, but I'm wondering if its possible to just rarely use compression or use it very little. I'm pretty sure I read in some article, ...

anyone have well engineered/produced album recommendations?
I go on this forum and usually see some records/artists mentioned that some of you guys feel are well engineered/produced, but anyone have any other ones? The ones I've heard about on here are: the beach boys pet sounds, any beatles album, some elliot smith stuff, deathcab stuff, some sonic youth, s...

Take a mic, stick it up your ass, then, take another mic, preferably an omni, put that in your mouth, and hit record , keep in mind you are standing in front of a blastingly loud guitar amp , and alternately turn forwards and backwards, and see what that sounds like. My guess is that it will sound ...

Now I ask for 44.1 again!!! I m back down to 44.1 and LOVING it. computer feels better, sounds are good, mixes hold their character straight through to the CD. Regarding requantizing in the DA->AD rout - it's very important to note that any modern analog to digital converter that can capture at 16bits is in fact recording at 20 or 24bits and then requantizing down to 16bit by adding dither - so you are not in fact avoiding dithering by doing a round of DA-...
