Vintage UA 175b / A Range reissue
Vintage Universal Audio 175b Rare tube predesessor to the 1176. One of the most amazing sounding compressors ever made. This one was recapped, retubed, and cleaned up in 2012. The interstage transformer was funky so I had it replaced with an identical (except working) UTC. Some rack rash and a few s...

Re: Future Austin Intern
<<but when I get around to starting the next one, I'll consider posting a "want ad" here. I'm not sure I would be able to offer the most comprehensive experience for an intern, but I work my ass off for my clients and could probably do a better job if I had someone who was good at taking care of som...

Re: Why I hate the tapeop messageboard
Because I give away valuable knowledge for free and get nothing in return. There are few people that post on this site that have as much as experience or have spent as many hours as myself in a control room. I almost find it relentlessly stultifying to log in. Third Monk Records will accept unsolic...

BTW
besides lusting after Joel's 827, I've been mixing my 3rd "live" album in the last month...Is this a sign that it's too expensive to record a "studio" record? I hope not

Re: Cheap preamps and self-delusion...
When you do get preamps, consider these first: 1. Urei 610- absolutely mondo beefy analog. Gun metal grey to deep bronze in tonal color. 2. API 312- sort of the antithesis to the Urei. Bright and clear. White in tonal color. 3. Neve 1063 or Neve 1073. Great preamps with very musical EQ onboard. Bro...

Re: What Did You Work On Tonight?9-14-03
Cleaning the studio with the intern after a Vocal session, so I can roll in my new studer A827 on tuesday. I am so fucking pumped. I have owned MCI tape machines before, but never the big bad momma of a studer that the 827 is. Oh man congrats.............the 827 is a GREAT machine. I hope someday I...

Re: Future Austin Intern
If you want to stay in Texas you could also try the FireStation in San Marcos. I think it is called that? Dallas has some fine studios as well. But just because other austin studios have not responded to this thread does not mean they are not looking for interns. I am sure a lot of austin studios d...

Re: Future Austin Intern
I feel that this rule is fundimental. When in a session there is always some heirarcy that serves a purpose. I feel that democracies "generally" are not the most effective approach to focused acomplishment. The producer and bandleader/songwrites are at the top, the engineer and bandmembers with sign...

Ampex ATR 102 1/2. My fav machine. They are a piece of change, but you can still get a decent one for $3500-4000.

Re: HOW OLD ARE YOU???
I'm 43, got a business degree and played in bands from 14 till 23. Then worked at a bakery for a couple years til I could make a living engineering. Have made a decent living making records for the last 18 years (even got to work w/ Brian's great band Glass Eye) Finally pulled it together and opened...

Just to clarifiy what I believe assistant's rules are (and yes after reading them i do realize I wrote them up "pre Pro Tools" era. Re: WTD: affordable midwestern studio w/2" 24 & goo
Echo Park in Bloomington Indiana is a cool place. I haven't been there in 5 years or so, but they have a nice old API, good rooms are talented and learned their shit long before Pro Tools came about. I don't have a number, but it shouldn't be hard to find.

Re: Am I going to burn for this?
I thought that with omnis, you pretty much avoided most phase problems. Also I have read about decca tree configurations that use all RCA 44s which of course are figure 8. Is my swiss cheese brain causing problems again?
