Thanks, Mr. Brains....

I'd heard different opinions on whether a signal was required to truly burn-in the tubes.... maybe the difference of opinion is centered around the NOS detail. Either way: thanks.

Q: Burning in new tube pre-amps

...hey, this is probably a dumb question but I just got a pair of Summit pres and I know the tubes need to be "burned in" a bit. My question is, when burning-in the tubes, do I have to be passing a signal or will just powering them on work to break-in the tubes? Recording on this project is schedule...

Re: home recording and finding time

Simplify * your setup and keep it as turnkey as possible. This is the best possible advice in this situation. I used to enjoy setting up to record -- getting the cables out, setting up mics, checking all the connections into and out of the computer. Now I keep a stripped-down setup in the basement ...

... Try the Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Mic Pre... Its about $190 new and it has got to be the most affordable tube pre that's NOT a starved-plate design. The difference is audible.

...out here in OR we have these red or yellow recycling bins to set out on garbage day... once they've been wiped clean of all the Evan Williams and PBR, they make pretty great low-end percussion instrument... I've used the bin as a kick on a sparse acoustic guitar/vox track... just held it over an ...

...you're right... thanks for the replies... and the ego-check. I honestly love music and want these musicians to succeed... and if I was in the studio with any of you, I'd shut up and watch..and take notes, because I respect all time, practice, studying, and effort that it took you to master your c...

Reputation vs. Know-it-alls

I'm not sure where to begin... I'm no Steve Albini, Chris Garges, Larry Crane (who else?s ass should I kiss here?) but for the last 15 years or so I have dedicated my free time, enthusiasm, sweat and patience to studying and practicing the art of recording and helping bands/musicians present their a...

BTW there are no structural support posts in the wall...its all ad-hoc I'm sure there is a lot to know and a lot that's already been said/written. I'm look...

Installing a control room window in an existing wall

I acquired a (seemingly) nice 4-pane studio window (for free!) off Craigslist and I want to install this between my control room and the tracking room of my basement studio. The control room is a finished large bedroom in a clean, dry basement. I want to open a wall between this room and the larger/...

micromanaging the process is an insane waste of time. +1 for sure Worked with one band that wanted less low-end. I muted they bass and they all responded "That's it!" then they asked what I did to the mix. The sad thing, was the bass player was in the room when I did it so the band looked like idio...
