Re: MD421 vs. SM57 on Electric Guitar
I use the 421 on guitar amps/cabs all the time. It's the first mic I reach for when recording electric guitar. For me, it's bigger sounding (not rolled off as much on top and bottom as a 57). I always think of the 57 as more nasal sounding than a 421. Of course, it also depends on what style of musi...

Re: What reverb units are good for recording?
On the t.c. side, I've really liked the Reverb 4000 (the stereo version of the 6000). A lot of very useful, high quality stuff in there. The M3000 is another fav. For Lexicon, the 300 is pretty nice when you don't have the cash for a 480 or 960.

Re: tips on recording bass direct
There are two things needed to getting good direct bass sounds. First is a high quality DI. Avalon, Aguilar, Radial, etc. all make great units. Lower priced units can thin out your tone. Also, high end preamps with good DI sections (Great River, etc.) can do the job. Second, as stated before compres...

Re: SSL & GC
20K? SSL says the price is 87K. Hard to believe GC is going to try and sell this since probably 80% of all GC customers think $300 for a 421 is too high. And how will Digi react to GC since this board is competition for the ICON? Inquiring minds want to know ........

Re: Very Compressed Vocals - New Settings or New Compressor?
Try running one comp into the other. That's what suprenice mode is supposed to emulate on the RNC. Not sure what kind of budget you have, but if that doesn't work then it might be time to look at upgrading. You can smash a vocal with an 1176 (ala Steve Earle) and it will still sound big and in your ...

Re: reverb choice
Generally, Lexicons are more "lush" while t.c.'s tend to be more "realistic". Kind of apples and oranges. I generally end up using both types in a single mix. Having used both the PCM91 and the M3000, I like the M3000 better. And to edit, it is much easier to quickly get to what you need on the M300...

The tripod with casters stand is the Ghost made by SE Electronics. It runs about the same as the higher priced Atlas SB36. And On Stage came out with a stand like the lower priced Atlas SB11 (heavy iron base and casters) which is around $130.

Coleman Audio, Furman, Wackie (Mackie) and ProCo also make what you're looking for. Though it may appear to be pricey, the Coleman stuff is head and shoulders above the rest.

Re: Mini Clip on Drum Mics... Whats recomended? (Toms)
Another vote for the E604. As stated before, while it doesn''t sound exactly like a 421 it gets you in the ballpark. And as an added bonus, it can take direct strikes from a drumstick. I've had a few out of control drummers just plow these things and the mic doesn't seem to notice. That said, I norm...

Springsteen has done live vocals over studio tracks for "Streets Of Philadelphia" and "Lonesome Day". Both have him out on the streets walking around singing while you can hear all the city noises (sirens, cars, etc.) in the background.

Re: Getting new clients
I agree with showing/giving them a partial song. Protect yourself. I think we'll be seeing more of this now that everyone and their grandmother has a "studio". So many bands/artists will bring CD's of poorly done previous projects with them to show me. To the band, they feel like these previous "att...

Re: FTP files to Alesis HD24
Have never had any problem with sending or receiving files. And though I'm sure you've already tried these, here's what I come up with off the top of my head: Are you using the ethernet connection? If so, do you have the right ftp address (the HD24's ftp address) entered in it? And the right passwor...
