Re: Help with big (for me) session setup. (Long)
i like the general setup. For vocal isolation i might have to vocalist sing facing the band so that the mic is pointing away from the source of the music, maybe towards the area with the least reflection (put up a blanket behind the singer) For me, personally, I would use the RNC to compress the dru...

Re: how to give a mix some depth
I like hard panning and ambience to "space out" my mix...drums i get a nice tight (almost dead sounding kit) with the close mics and compression on the snare, and then pan the toms hard left and right. Then I throw overheads up and pan har left and right...the bleed of one drum to another mic when p...

Re: Favourite Stereo Mic Placement
My personal favorite... Two Shure SM-57's in the far back corners of a room (opposite a full band) running stereo...very realistic sounding...as if you were in the room... On a side note, I heard playback thru headphones, and turned to tell my drummer to stop playing because it sounded so realistic ...

Re: looking for a tight and full snare sound, having trouble
I like using SM 57 on top and bottom, light compression on the top and compressing the shit out of the bottom mic, so you dont hear the sizzle as much blended with the top...then i let the overheads do the rest (I used Vintage Neumann 84's, fwiw, but any sdc/ldc in stereo for OH's will be more than ...

Re: Question about "good" mics...
What you are noticing is probably the difference between crap and not crap. The C1, I believe is a condenser, and will pick up everything, regardless of polar pattern. Condensers in general are brighter than dynamics. Try micing the acoustic at the spot where the neck meets the body. The soundhole i...

Re: Quick Easy Acoustic Guitar Recording Sound
Put the KSM 32 about 6 inches off the front of the guitar, pointed so that the diaphragm is where the neck meets the body. If you want more room, throw the Samson condenser about 4 feet off the lower bout (the bottom of the guitar) and about 6 feet up, and pan stereo.. Or throw the samson the same w...

Re: your drum techniques
I record in smaller rooms, so room mics arent always great for my setups... Neumann KMi 84's on OH (Vintage...what a mic!) SM57 on snare top and bottom (compressed to the point where it sounds sharp and crisp) SM57 on the Beater of the kick, custom made speaker mic outside Neumann KM 140's on toms, ...

Re: the best drum sound(in my opinion that is)
Bands that John Feldmann produces (he is the lead guitarist for Goldfinger) have great rock drum sounds. These bands include The Used (Self Titled) and Story Of The Year (Page Avenue). I found out he uses PT with a plugin that models analog tape. The snares always sound tight and punctuated, the kic...

Re: Had did you get started?
12ears old. I had received a digital 8 Track (Which I still use 4 years later) as an early bar-mitzvah gift. I am now 16 and working summers at a pro audio rental company and record with all the high end gear. I could remenisce (sp.?), but I'll keep it short. I still use the 8 Track all the time. Be...

Re: Favorite ways to mic drums
Just wrapped up a drum-recording session yesterday, and was extremely pleased with the sounds i got. The Band was a heavy rock/alternative band (The likes of the Used, Story of the Year, Finch, etc...) and I wanted to have a real tight snare, and full sounding toms, so here's what i did: Snare: Shur...

Studer Microphones?!
I work at a pro audio rental company (i know...a lot of perks...) and i came across a set of Studer (Look like SDC) microphones. I can get the model number tomorrow, as i can't remember it. Does anyone know about these mics?
Anyone use them?
How do they sound?
Thanks,
Alex

Re: Making mono sound like stereo in Pro Tools
Some kind of stereo delay might sound cool...im not a PT user, so if thats not in the box, duplicate the drack, make one L, one R, and move one a MS or 2 foward...some light chorus may help too, i suppose...
Experiment! Play around with some different ideas...you can always undo it..
