Mic Pre Selection and DIY Kits
Yeah, I know it's been discussed a lot, but I can't find the answers I'm looking for with the search feature. What is a good, inexpensive mic pre that I can use for multiple sources in my studio (Drums, guitar, vocals, acoustic, etc...) Downwards of $2-300? Also, does anyone know the name of the com...

"Balancing" a mix
When I recorded last time, I mic-ed the guitar amp in stereo (a Neumann 140 and a Sennheiser 421, For what it's worth). The Neumann had a higher level than the 421, so for the rhythm guitar I switched the inputs so if the neumann was right in lead, it was left in rhythm, so the mix would sound balan...

Great for music listening, not for mixing.
They are much more comfortable and normal sounding than the ipod's headphones, but still do not provide as accurate of a reference as say Sony 7506's will. I'd buy em for use with the ipod...i'm growing tired of my ipod headphones...

I need some serious help...
Some have told me to go dynamic, others condenser. I need the right mics for the job...ok... Im going to be recording rock drums...i have all the mics picked out, but i need something for the rack and floor toms. Some people tell me that condensers will have too much cymbal bleed, and others tell me...

So, somebody asked me...
My drummer (who is a novice when it comes to recording/studio technology) asked me what I needed a mic pre for. I didn't know how to give him the best explanation, so i told him "it makes shit sound better." Could someone help me out with a better explanation? (Technical and/or in laimens(<sp?) term...

Re: Sennheiser 421 question
I believe the U5 is the one i use. It had a 5 Way bass control at the XLR connecter that gives a high-pass filter all the way to a bass boost. That is one hell of a great mic...good for guitars, kick drums, rack toms...almost everything...

Re: Telephone recording.
i did this 2 weeks ago...you're in luck! Pop open the headset of the phone. There will be 4 wires (generally white, green, black and red, all should be the same no matter what phone). Clip the green and white wires (or the ones connected to the SPEAKER of the telephone...very important step) Next, t...

Rack/Floor toms
What would/do you use to mic toms? I was thinking of trying Neumann 140s, as the 421s and Beta 98s I would be using on my recording are going to be unavailable for the dates I will record. This seemed like a sensible substitute...anyone ever try it? I have at my disposal: Shure 57/58/beta 57/beta 58...

I have an iBook G4.
Can I use 2 Griffin iMics at the same time? One on each USB 2.0 input to allow 4 track recording?
thanks,
Alex

Kick Drum
I plan on recording within the next month or so and have mics selected for Drums OH, Room, Snare, Hats, Ride, and toms and I am still pondering on the kick. I want a punchy, deep kick sound (i already have a drummer with such a kick, but capturing it is the trick...) The mics I have at my disposal (...
