I don't have many channels to work with, so the other day I tracked drums with three lines: kick & snare together from a sub mixer, with stereo room. Compressed the K&S and left the room dry. Beautiful. I think that, considering the performance, this was the best possible use of 3 lines. I am totall...

For the parallel compression, I used the FuzzPlus2 VST fuzz box. It's free. The cool thing about it is that it has a really cool tone knob like a Big Muff or a Rat, and you just turn it where you need for your sound I love parallel with that plug! Instant presence. Nice mix. Performance does lag no...

Reaper has everything you need, and then some. I still use Live for personal writing, but Reaper is ideal for straight tracking. I almost always use it for other people's projects, because I find it easier to edit performances. I've used similar DAWs like Cubase, Vegas, and Sonar, but can't find any...

Where do you run sound? Have you spoken with Richard at Classic, he may be looking for someone. I run sound at the Down Home in Johnson City. I met Richard in Bristol a couple years ago. He's a lot of fun! I have already found a roommate in Asheville though, and am planning to move in June. Thanks ...

Looking for studio internship in Asheville, NC
I'm a self-taught engineer ready to start learning in a studio environment. By self-taught, I mean I've been lurking on TOMB, reading Bob Katz, and producing demos for friends, bandmates, and myself. I've also been running sound at the top listening room in my hometown for three years (roughly 300 s...

I am interested in just a stand alone vst host that remains stand alone -- even when other programs are opened up. Seems some start linking automatically with Rewire. Thanks for your input - I may uninstall and reinstall, but uncheck the Rewire slave option. Another nice thing about Reaper is they ...

Reaper has an indefinite free trial, give it a shot. http://reaper.fm By the by, you will not be able to get 'realtime' VST effects through a windows system. There will always be ASIO buffer latency, the amount depending on your hardware (both on the computer and the sound card side). You will notic...

Audio Technica 4-channel 48V supply: $170 http://www.amazon.com/Technica-CP8506-Channel-Phantom-Supply/dp/B0002M6I9I Mackie 1402VLZ (for comparison): $430 You might be able to get an M267 for under $100 but it doesn't really do what you need it to do. The AT 4-channel 48V supply is cheap (compared t...

IMO the main reason to use PT is to share projects within industry, i.e. to send things to other studios. Since I'm in a similar position of recording myself and my friends, I've never looked twice at PT. I don't know what kind of advantages it has to offer over a $60 Reaper license and a collection...

I use Ableton Live for electronic stuff and Reaper for everything else. Since some DAWs are tailored to specific applications, it might help us if you give a bit more information about what else you are working with and what you are trying to accomplish? The HD24 is a pretty cool box for location re...

Re: Replacing foam in old microphones
I got some old Electro-Voice microphones off of eBay recently (PL77 and N/D757), and have discovered that all the foam inside their windscreens is completely destroyed. I contacted EV service and they told me that they can't help me because these mics are discontinued. I stole some foam from a $5 d...
