Re: Moving to Portland, OR

I'm good for this Friday. I'm in Southeast, but I can go anywhere.

Re: Moving to Portland, OR

Well, I'm going to try to be a songwriter/performer. I've always had a conflict between science and art I guess, and I'd really like to just wholeheartedly work on being a musician. That's the only way I think I can reach and maybe surpass my potential. I'm going to Portland to do this because I rea...

Moving to Portland, OR

I'm a big tape op fan, and I check out these boards all the time. I'm moving to Portland in the beginning of January and I'll be looking for work, friends, and collaborators. I work at Line 6 now as a software test engineer. I have an electrical engineering degree. I play drums, guitar, and sing. I ...

Bedroom recording for analysis and discussion

Hey, I was wondering how well my bedroom recordings were coming out according to some other tape opppers. If you could check this out, I'd appreciate it. http://www.haydenmag.com/beat%20writing%20mix2.mp3 It's a basic sketch for a song. No vocals yet. Beat and keyboards created in reason. Guitars (J...

Re: Good Pre's into Cheap DAW's

I'm always on the hunt to upgrade my bedroom studio. I used to buy a lot of ebay junk that didn't work, thinking I'd take the time to fix it, but I never really did. So, tip one, buy new. But here's a thought. The recording industry is doing horribly. I used to run at a studio that was charging two ...

Presonus Hottest Hot Rod

I just ordered my Presonus Eureka. I'm pretty excited about. I've heard a lot of good things for such a bargain price. And since I record in my bedroom, it should do me well. Now, in the most recent Tape Op, I think it was, there's talk of replacing the opamps with different chips. Maybe the Burr-Br...

Re: Mics vs. Mic pres vs. Converters for my bedroom

Thanks for all the help so far. I even like those duvet covers. My room is bad. I have a lot of foam wedges all over the walls to try and cut down on the standing wave problem. But I think it is time I build a home depot iso booth. I was thinking of using soundboard instead of doors, but it smells k...

Mics vs. Mic pres vs. Converters for my bedroom

I'd like to make an upgrade to my bedroom signal chain. I'm not quite sure which step in the chain I'll find greatest improvement in. So I look to fellow tape op readers. I record vocals, acoustic and electric guitars in my bedroom. That's about it. I like my electric guitar sound. My acoustic could...

Re: Quad-Eight Mic Pres for trade

Ok, so I spent a few hours with my tech friend today. We decided that these quad eight things aren't really mic pres, but they are preamps. But it seems, the way they look, is that they're repro cards for a tape machine. There's an eq module missing, and someone did some eq mods on the bottom of the...

Re: Quad-Eight Mic Pres for trade

I'd price the pres at around $50 a channel. Say $400 for the whole rack including power supply.

Re: Quad-Eight Mic Pres for trade

I didn't have anything specific in mind. I mean, there's no paticular model of anything I'm dying to have. I hear very good things about the FMR compressor. I hear the ashly sc50, while cheap used, does a good job. Studios always seem to have a couple dbx 160's. I could use some more work horse mics...

Quad-Eight Mic Pres for trade

I got a rack of eight QE 7510 cinema pres. Barrier strip in, barrier strip out. Fully discrete. Transformer in and out. There's some buzz in about half the modules. I'm going to tech through it this weekend. Working bipolor 24 volt powersupply. Why don't I want them anymore? I got myself an old 1974...
