Has anyone taken a Distressor and found different settings that emulate "one-trick pony" compressors? DBX 160VU, LA-2A etc.?

Has anyone tried linking compressors when tracking bass? For example, the DI channel triggers the compressor and that controls the compressor on the amp track.

Thoughts?

Anyone have any ideas on how to get together money to make an idependent record? A buddy of mine threw some investor/ donation "parties" where he played a few songs and talked about the project. He ended up getting $20K in the end, which was enough for him.

Any other methods anyone has tried?

Hey, I've never worked on tape before, would anyone be willing to explain a few things to me? -Which brands are still making tape? -How much is a reel of 2 in.? 1/2 in.? -How many takes of a tune can I get on a reel (let's say a 5 minute song.) -How many times can a reel be recorded on before notice...
