Speaking of the stepped attenuator I posted a link to earlier, talking about it made me finally get off my ass and work on it a little more. Unfortunately I couldn't find my drill, so I wasn't able to mount it in the old Digidesign Video Slave Driver that I was going to use for the case, so here's w...

Perfectly understandable. The P4 series was notorious for having a "deep execution pipeline", which means that it's easy to reach high clock speeds, but the instructions per clock are lacking. Ironically the P4 was considerably slower than top of the line P3s when it came out for this exact reason. ...

I've been working on putting together this guy for a while now: http://www.diyfidelity.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=0_33&products_id=32 I can't tell you how it sounds yet because I haven't gotten around to racking it up, but I will say that the concept is good, it's gotten good reviews from people,...

Yeah, keep in mind that a lot of stuff you might have had on PCI cards before is integrated into the motherboard, so see if you drop some PCI cards. As far as processors go, it's a great time to stay with Intel right now (as much as it pains me to say it, being an AMD fanboy). For anything other tha...

Is this the kind of studio that you build around you, pharaoh's tomb style? Where's the door to get in? On a more practical note, square rooms are generally bad for room modes, although that's a simplified statement and not always the case. Also, that console sounds positively gigantic for the room ...

Re: Cell phone interference
Some switch mode power supplies are especially vulnerable. I have seen a doctor's waiting room with a sign up requesting that patients switch off their phones while in the building because it causes their PC's to actually crash! This is standard practice in hospitals and on planes, but has little t...

Also on that note, core 2 duo is better than core duo. and generally speaking the higher the first digit of the model number the better. 7200 trumps 5200 trumps 2300. This is a little misleading for the Core series, because Intel uses a different numbering system for mobile processors and quad-core...

Count me among the DBX 163x lovers. I truly love that box, I got 4 of them... Yeah, I think the thing I dislike the most about mine is that I only have one! I can't decide whether to keep it in the rack or with my traveling gear for bass. Although I've been doing a lot more upright and not ...

Well, it's a new machine, 1G RAM, and all I was doing was trying to dump 16 tracks via lightpipe into Sonar. It would go for a couple minutes and then the CPU would run way up and then the audio would drop out and the recording would be ruined. Now that I've switched off virtual memory it will reco...

According to some quick calculations, your axial room modes should be around 46hz, 56hz, and 140hz. That translates to possible bumps around F# (low and mid), A (low and mid), and maybe a middle C# on the bass. Of course, this is very simplified and a real room also has tangential and oblique modes ...

Can you see that visually in the waveform if you apply the compression? Or does it look even? To me it sounds more like your room has a low frequency peak due to standing waves, which is pretty common unless you've spent a bunch of time putting in treatment. For the most part, a standard compressor ...

For bass, my favorite plugin has always been Blockfish. It's free (go to http://www.digitalfishphones.com ), easy to use, and cool sounding. However, I'm not quite clear on what your issue is.. you're saying that you need a ratio of more than 8:1? Have you tried playing with other parameters, like a...
