I think mobo RAID is ok for RAID 1, but the problem is that RAID 5 is better in so many ways, and for that you really want a separate controller so you don't load down your CPU with it. Personally, I wouldn't do RAID for the system drive unless you were working somewhere where you absolutely couldn'...

A little tip if you pick up a computer from an OEM like Compaq, Acer, etc: go into Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, and remove pretty much everything that's not labeled "Windows". None of it is useful for audio. Also, I haven't tried doing anything audio-related in Vista yet, but I will say tha...

Those M80s eBay for twice that much, and retail for 3 times.

No, my crappy mics are things like SM58 knockoffs, not the cool kind of crappy mics. What exactly do you mean by "retro"? I'm not sure I'm really looking for a retro sound out of a ribbon mic, although I could be wrong.. Also, the guy from Shinybox posted earlier in this thread, which reminded me th...

The drive could be bad, but that's unlikely the root cause. My guess is the TOC (Table of Contents) is corrupt on the hard drive. The only way to verify this is reformat and check all sectors. I've seen this behaviour before with a bad TOC. Do you fanatically defragment and maintain that drive? Als...

and further...what exactly does a failing hard drive do? anything similar to this problem? I've noticed that in general, when a hard drive starts to go on a Windows machine you'll have frequent times when Explorer (the process that's viewing the files on your computer, not the web browser) will eit...

Sorry for starting this with a sarcastic response. I've had an earwax problem the last few days that's kept me from mixing and it's had me pretty frustrated. I agree with whoever said that the best "starting point" is no eq or compression, and that experimentation is the best way to learn this stuf...

This is good advice, but keep in mind that if you're recording a lefty piano, you should do the inverse of this.

My favorite EQ setting is: +10.7dB @ 254hz -7.8dB @ 3071hz +3.14dB @ 16,765hz (preferably with an extra warm Q setting) Just keep in mind that you'll want to have the "bypass" button depressed. Also, I like to use an opto-compressor with the threshold low, the attack and release high, and the ratio ...

Regarding the TLM103: I completely understand that a lot of people consider it overpriced, and not really much of a mic at all. For the most part I agree. However, selling it is not an option. First off, it's not actually the studio's mic; my studio partner bought it before we joined forces. Second,...

As an IT guy for a high school with well over 600 Macs, I can guarantee that you'll run into just as many stupid software issues as with a PC. Even if you don't feel like a computer expert on either system, don't switch OSes just for the fun of it; if you work on a Mac, buy a Mac, and if you work in...

Re: is this system drive failure?

so i was mixing a song, and pro tools crashed, but it didn't give me an error, the entire program just immediately closed and the rack kept spitting out a horrible noise into my monitors (not white noise, more like a looped millisecond of the track). so i restarted my computer and launched pro tool...

One last thought: Why does everybody have to own all this sh*t these days? I'm consistently amazed that people will spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on mediocre gear, when there's already so much amazing gear sitting killer sounding rooms that can be booked for next to nothing these days.....

Your mic locker looks like this. What do you buy next?

I talked with my studio partner a couple days ago, and we had a discussion about our next upcoming purchase. Both of us agree that our mic locker is a major weakness in our current setup, so we want to look at getting something new. Here's what we have: 1x Neumann TLM-103 1x EV RE-27 2x Shure SM81 2...

When my old band put out their last EP, we pressed 1000 and when they came back we had a LOT of trouble getting them to play consistently in car CD players. I don't remember actually getting the problem figured out, if I recall correctly the replication guys blamed it on our mastering guys and vice ...
