I'm not sure how you would best deal with the gain staging issue - of course your ears should be your guide. I use the pres in an SR-424 and like the sound quite a bit. I don't use either the EQs or the faders on the way in....just take a line from the inserts through a pair of MOTU 2408s and utiliz...

New release from Cincinnati rock band Miney Mo

Tracked / mixed at home in my attic studio. Mastered by Dave Davis @ theallnightparty We started tracking back in January and hosted our "direct to USB drive" release last night. In retrospect, there are things I would have approached a little differently - aren't there always? - but I'm pretty plea...

your tone + comp

I'd say spend a lot of time futzing with compression after capturing the essential sound you want. When you hear loud guitar in a room, your ear is supplying compression. It isn't there when you listen back to the mix (unless you are mixing at super high volume) so you have to twiddle until you find...

Miney Mo

New indie-ish rock stuff from Cincinnati.

I play bass and recorded / mixed. Strictly demo caliber but I'm pretty happy with 'em.

A Dulli article would be cool, though I don't gather he's the recordist. Though John Curley (bassist from the Afghan Whigs) owns a studio if I'm not mistaken... He does. http://www.ultrastudio.com/Ultrasuede_Studio/Home.html It's a nice room with a fantastic vibe and a great history. I actually had...

Well...there is always autotune the news. And very agreed with the "because it was new theory." Just like every album released in 1984 had dx7 all over it - VH is a case in point. I was a young pup when I first heard the faux horn lead-in on "I'll Wait" and even though a critical listening now tells...

I'm far from a pro....but I'd try maybe notching out a frequency in the bass that corresponds to your bump in the kick to allow a little room.

Maybe a little sidechain action in the bass compression so it opens up some room for the kick?

Those are the first ideas that come to my mind.

dag yo, I was just listening to this a few weeks ago at a friend's place. At first it was just background music, but then "I Hate You" came on and it started driving me crazy because I recognized it from somewhere. After massive head scratching and brain coaxing, I realized it was covered by The Fal...

i wasn't sure if it would play right, even though there were no scratches. tomorrow it will be 1/2 off, so should i pick it up anyways? it was two against nature. hey, for a buck you can't lose. It's a great album. Hell...it even has Vinnie Colaiuta on it. Of course I may be biased - the summer tha...

hmm....I come down on the "wrong" side of this as well seeing as I think think the Dan is awesome. But they do represent a very big dividing line in taste. I'm inclined to write off the folks who hate Steely Dan as jealous...but I get the feeling that it has to do with the near soul-less way they ta...

I just remembered that I used to have T-Racks when I was running on os 9, and I found that it did a pretty good job for the self mastering of things. Is this still considered a good program? Might be something to consider. Once upon an OS9, I also used T-racks and thought it provided a pretty decen...

what software should i look into for doing it? i've got the logic 8 bundle and access to pro tools at the moment. For a home mastering project of the caliber you are describing....I think that waveburner should be sufficient. Comes with the logic8 bundle......you can normalize, sequence....hell.......

I can easily get behind several fronts of this discussion and have personally done "releases" a number of different ways. Obviously, pro mastering would be optimal and desirable but, in lieu of having the resources for a really good ME, I wouldn't suggest a cheapo send off mastering job. In many cas...

What seems to be confusing this for you is that you probably assume that there is a standard definition for clipping. There isn't. Of course with 24 bit, there is no real reason for being anywhere near clipping. Agreed. and therein lies the problem because I have nothing left to turn down except th...

It wouldn't make any difference if there were. By the time DP gets the signal, it's already been through the converters. If you clip the converters, there is nothing any software can do to fix it. It can only turn down the clipped signal. I follow you here....I'm just not sure at this point if it i...
