Apparently the Echo has spdif out (via some weird midi cable adapter) as well, so that seems to be a great option as I can still use pt7 and my mbox2 and only spend 200. Is the RME really 4x better? It costs that much more and I'm trying to make sure I don't want to save up OR just get the echo now....

IF I went the RME route, what are the best ways to get the digital signal into protools (with 9 as an option, since I might upgrade from 7)? I have an mbox2 with spdif, but is that butchering the signal from the RME somehow? Once its digital, its digital right? Is the AES via XLR better quality? CLE...
